So, BAs, eh? Interesting.

So, what will you all be taking next year (or this year if the thread manages to survive)?

I'm kind of stuck as I haven't bothered with my BA for sometime, and the only majors that I can consider are Anthropology, History (including the pre-honours units, but honours itself is a no-no) and those that kick off in second year. Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away I considered taking Heritage and Museum studies, but I don't even know if that will still be on offer next year. Oh well, I'll work out my study programme towards the end of the month (I'm open to suggestions, though).

With all respect, Museum studies does not sound very exciting.

It's the Heritage component that I'm somewhat interested in. I have tried to ignore the 'and museum' part of the title because as you say, "[w]ith all respect, Museum studies does not sound very exciting":p.

I'm considering taking as many units from the facutly of eco and business as possible (political economy in all likelihood), but given the nature of my programme, table b majors aren't something that I can seriously consider. Still, that cuts back on the number of Arts units that I have to take, so that means that I don't really have to worry about testing the waters with something as thoughtful as the study of poetic forms of museum construction in the dark ages from a post modernistic bent... As you can all no doubt tell, I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to BAs. I'm going to miss the Science faculty.

Political economy is the way to go. Learn all those snazzy economics terms and argue with commerce people.

I wish i had the patience and debating skills to continue on with political economy or government. I should've started in first semester cause having entered half way through the year i felt disadvantaged having never done any such unit before (unlike the others in my class).

I'm planning to major in art history so i might take heritage and cultural studies. Isn't it offered every year?

History sounds alright but i think you need a credit average to go onto third year which completely disqualifies me.

If you loathe it so much why not just graduate with your BSc (Hons) and be done with it?

It's not that I loathe the BA, it's just that at the moment it's the least of my concerns. As to leaving rather than staying on, well, I didn't bother to apply for any graduate positions earlier in the year (at the time I was set on finishing the entire double), I haven't exactly been out building networks in recent years, and, given my efforts over recent months, I may be in need of another two years to make up for a poor Honours performance, so I'm going to keep my options open and pre-enrol as I look for a job.

A Heritage and Museum Studies major is actually quite an employable major for those who do well in it - most museums and galleries are now on the look out for folks trained in it. This gives the institutions a degree of credibility with which they can face attacks from the outside world - remember the bruhaha surrounding the National Museum in Canberra acouple of years back?

Yes, and why no hons in history? Time?

An extra year. The potential to get a supervisor who didn't like you because they didnt like the structure of your essays. I know of one in the school of pols who did not like the way I write essays (I think it may have been a case of writing an essay that is too broad for the fear of being marked down for not covering enough but then getting marked down for not being narrow enough. Damned if you do and damned if you don't). I would die a terrible death if I got that person as a supervisior. Plus too much arts wanking can be soul destroying.

But one chooses one's own supervisor ... ?

Arts 'wanking' makes the world go round. :)

Over ere' at unsw arts we get a choice of a few. But depending on the area you choose to write on you may get a limited choice of academics that specialise in that area.

Right, I see ... Well then, the trick would be to choose who you really want - regardless of their subject area - and then frame your honours thesis topic around that, e.g. "the influence of Kafka on Australian cricketing history"; "gendering of iron age history and its links with US foreign policy between the wars" etc etc. The list is limitless :)

Well, I'm currently nearing the end of one Honours year, and another, though it would be interesting, isn't something that I want to consider at the moment. It's also a case of not being passionate about what a BA has to offer (if I could just move into a BEc or BEc SocSci I would, without hesitation), but still wanting to study those units that I find interesting. A simple BA will be fine, as far as I'm concerned, but I do know that my thoughts on the matter may well change.

I'm considering history and I will end up studying a thematic unit or two, it's just that at the moment I'm being a bit of an idiot and dismissing it on the grounds that I will not be able to use the Harvard or Chicago style of referencing. The bastards *shakes fist*.

What about everyone else?

Overly stressful. I have always been a last minute worker, and this year has been no different... Apart from the fact that this is no mere essay and that I am worrying about the fact that what I produce and the mark that it receives will pretty much be indicative of both my capabilities as a person and my achievements throughout my regular undergrad career. As a matter of fact, I shouldn't be on BOS at the moment, and I think that I'll go into self-imposed exile for a few weeks so that I can get through this sense of writer's block that's leading me to procrastinate.

You should seriously consider taking an Honours year. Provided that you plan your time and stick to such a schedule, you cannot go wrong :).

Don't be scared. I remember the first essay I wrote with Harvard style (2nd year 2nd session)...It's not that hard. Only negative is that it eats up word count. But overall its much more efficient.

Not hard, I know, but at the moment I find such an idea annoying.
