Hey, I’m going into year 11 this year (2020) and am looking for a good English tuition centre to go to. Would group coaching centres be okay or would a private tutor be better? Also Delta is out of the question since it doesn’t offer tuition for my school.

Cheers

I would recommend a private tutor. English is a bit different to other subjects in terms of what you need from your tutor. Having a class is basically like your school, there's no point paying for that. I recommend private.

What do you mean Delta doesn't offer tuition for your school?

Delta seems to only offer tuition to those in top schools. I assume its because they don't want people slowing the classes down.

I'm actually starting to hate Delta now lol. What business do they have judging a students ability from the school they attend? It's these kinds of tuition places that accept students that are only the best and then publish on their page "oh look all our students state ranked."

A good tuition place helps the weak students(provided they have the drive to work hard) get a really good mark as well not just students who are already really good. What's the point of that imao.

I also strongly recommend to ask your English teacher if they are willing to look over your practice essays and provide feedback. I did this and it helped immensely in my case

Well the model of these high-performance tuition places is to make good people even better. Weak students would inevitably slow the pace of the class or not get the intended effect out of the tuition.

Not necessarily. By 'weak' I didn't mean students who don't have the capability but students who are just getting a bad mark for one reason or another. Maybe their study technique is wrong? Maybe they're just not receiving enough feedback? These are all factors that can contribute to a student being labelled as 'weak' aside from them not having the capability, but if you automatically assume that low ranking school = students who do not have the capability then that's completely wrong. A lot of times their bad marks can be attributed to the teacher not being good enough or the class being filled with distracting students etc all of which are more prominent in low ranking schools.

In either of the cases above students like those who really have the capability would be refused the tuition they need just because the tutoring place views them as being incapable of keeping up as they come from a low ranking school.

It's a better safe than sorry method and its intended effect is achieved.

Yeah I agree but I just don't believe it's ethical personally. I was lucky enough to go to a tutor for 3u maths who didn't discriminate me because of my crap school and really crap marks in year 10. I ended up with a mark of 96. That's a real tutor right there..

I'd look around for private tutors, given the recent dramas there might be a few ex-Delta tutors around or similarly qualified individuals staying away from tutoring centres.

Delta seems to only offer tuition to those in top schools. I assume its because they don't want people slowing the classes down.
From what i've gathered in other threads, it seems Delta have specialised tutors for given schools. Those tutors can then be familiar with the texts for a given school, the exact assignments students will be working on, the marking criteria/standards that the teachers have and so on.

To play devil's advocate, if the majority of potential customers are from top schools, and you can maximise the benefits for the students by adopting such a strategy (which I think seems reasonable) then it makes a lot of sense to do that.

I might add that although having a private tutor is beneficial for more personalised teaching, they are expected to have a solid knowledge on your text, otherwise there is not much point. My point is that it is up to the tutor to know the syllabus and texts well enough to have be able to teach you. On the other hand, most tutoring centres aren't as geared toward the individual student but more towards all students. They also provide you with decent resources.

Do y’all know where to find private tutors? Is there a good website or should I just look on these forums?

Couldn't have said it better myself 🙃

There's another (more important) reason: Now with Delta, every single Year 12 class we teach is both school-specific and text-specific. This multiplies the number of classes we need to put on by very, very large factor with no change in student numbers to cover even some of our costs. The only way this level of specificity would be possible, with only state-ranking teachers and tutors, is to limit the schools we take. We have to continue teaching our most loyal schools, which just coincidentally happen to be selective by and large.

Our approach renders each of our Y12 classes to essentially become assessment-strategy planning sessions with one of our senior academics. If your upcoming assessment is a speech, we will practice that speech with you during our classes (which will also include a healthy sprinkle of textual analysis) leading up to your assessment, with only other students from your school - doing the same text - present. This is all of course, in addition to the huge amount of course material we provide and your own private tutor who marks all your essays and takes all of your 1-1 tutorials.

You'll be supervised by someone with a NSW state rank in English, our instructions are far, far clearer (and include anecdote of personal experience) than the majority of disillusioned, overworked, underpaid school teachers, who still bicker amongst themselves in their craggy, clashing takes on the new syllabus. It's smarter to seek guidance from someone who's actually produced the results in real-life.

A service of the above description can only be made available in small amounts. I won't ever be able to get rich scaling Delta because actually good English teachers (to the standard we work at) are simply too few. Where our students are driven and willing to put in the effort, we can lead them to astounding new heights. We control our intake so as to ensure that everyone who does place their trust in us, is provided with the lowest-risk environment possible to achieve their goals. To do anything otherwise (charging what we do!) would be unethical.

How come there are classes for comprehensive schools like Carlingford High and Cheltenham, and there isn't any classes for better schools which are selective like Sydney Tech, Sefton and St George Girls. Is it simply because of the demand?

Hey Accurate,

That's right! It's really just demand. We're no longer offering classes for Carlingford, but we are for Cheltenham Girls. We do consistently receive enquiries from the schools you mentioned (especially St. George Girls) but unfortunately these schools are too far away from our Epping centre to provide a comfortable margin of operational viability. We will be offering a distance course (essay marking and access to our course material) very shortly! (and only for the schools we don't teach in-person)

Some of my Year 12 friends really enjoyed Talent 100 for English. The Head of English at Kambala (Jenny Wells) was awesome – would definitely look into that
