It helps if you post a link. You won't notice too much difference between ATI and Nvidia, only a difference in performance (and that depends on what model you get).

The Radeon 9600 or 9550 make awesome budget cards, as long as you get them for a decent price. I'm pretty sure you can get a FX5900 for around the same price, if you really wanted a Geforce.

remember, more memory doesnt always mean better, eg: radeon 9600xt 128MB has better performance than radeon 9600xt 256MB.. i think it has something to do with RAM speed.

ive got a 9600 and it has served me well.. not a hardcore gamer, but here and there... its good enough for the more recent games, but dont go changing the res to 1600x1200.

well all i basically need this new graphics card is to be able to play some new games that require atleast 64mbs cards. i am not a hardcore gamer, and in recent years havent really played games like doom3 and halflife2. i am more of a strategy genre type of gamer. and those type of games require much less computer power. so my conclussion is , i basically just need a decent video card that will allow me to run an accosional game or two.

the examples u guys told me will probably be my final choice in choose a card. cuase i dont see a point in spending too much money in a card i wont actually need .

what uni do you go to? since if youre a unsw student, you have access to factiva, which allows you to search through many newspapers (eg. financial review, smh, etc). i dont have an article on me relating to any of those though, sorry.

Nekkid: Thats a shame :(

Sasha: I think you will be very happy with those cards. They will play anything you throw at them. They will be more than enough for any strategy game. They will also play Half Life 2 very well, if you ever feel like playing it. They can run Doom 3 well, though you would probably have to have a lower resolution for the 9600 (or use the tweaks for ATi cards). Like you said, no use spending $300+ for power you won't need. Both cards offer a great performance for the price they are at.

Hell, I'm still using a second hand FX5200 I scored for 50 bucks a year ago, and I have happily played through Half Life 2, FarCry, HomeWorld 2, Halo and C&C: Generals with it. I could also play Doom 3 but it was too scary. Considering both those cards kick the ass of mine, they should be enough for your needs.

Hahaha. Sounds very familiar.

Once I was playing Doom 3 with a friend. It was nightime and we had the lights off and the sounds up. We would take turns of controlling the character (we had to, both of us became nervous wrecks after about 10 minutes). We were up to the secret area where you get the chaingun. Everything was silent until ROOAAR were surrounded by those Imps things. Holy shit we jumped and ran out of the house screaming. My friend was such wreck he started crying. I am 18 and he is 19, and here we were, scared to death by a video game.

That was around 6 months ago. I haven't touched the game since. It sits on my start menu mocking me. I hate that game.

Its 10 times scarier than any movie I've seen. Its all about atmosphere and tension. The whole game is about the developers using different ways to scare the shit out of you.

Then again, I love immersive video games.

Try out the FX5200 or the cards of GeForce or Radeon at around the $100 mark if u dont need a high performer
