Ipod.

Right size; Reliable; sound quality is really factored in by the headphones. If you get some Sennheiser headphones or something you'll have awesome quality.

best mp3 player? iAudio X5.
best mp3 player regarding cost? iRiver H320 or Creative Micro 20Gb.
best sounding? all three listed above all sound really good (haven't personally tried out the iAudio X5 but all reports i've read are positive)

if you're looking for great sound quality you obviously wouldn't get the iPod.

ease of use is subjective. can you spend half an hour reading the supplied manual? if so, every player is easy to use.

i tried not to buy the ipod, i looked high and low for an alternative and could i find one that was better? no. the zen touch was compelling, but the ipod won on its software, add ons like italk and itrip and ease of use. ive had it for 3 weeks and love it, however battery life is pretty shite compared to zen's 26 hours continuous. ipod is the way to go.

just a basic player go the iRiver IFP 795 for around $200

Long play time and good quality and reliability.

Also Mp3 Player should be about portability, the iAudio is a bit large for my liking.
