What kind of software did you need? Most of the essential stuff is bundled with it by default.

If you're a developer definitely get eclipse + full versions of vim and gcc though.

Songbird for music I hear is good, has a plugin for last.fm somewhere. Do they still bundle rhythmbox? I remember thinking that was absolute dogshit, and that the KDE one (amarok) was much better (and also has lastfm integration, so check that out if songbird isn't to your taste).

Bittorrent you can't go past transmission. Tiny footprint and all the features you'll really need.

Jazzing up as in pointless graphical stuff? Try compiz fusion, which should be installed by default iirc.

There is no doubt about it, Amarok is simply a great audio player.

Upgrade open office to 3.0 if you only have 2.4

I can't advise you on a torrent client because I use the stock one that is integrated into opera.

If you didn't get Gimp, download it

Knotes is handy (Like post it notes for your screen)

avant-window-navigator is good dockbar.........A little grumpy to get set up correctly, but once set up it works beautifully (even in KDE!)
