You've obviously had some very shit teachers.

I agree that academics know what they're talking about but so do teachers, I've had a lot of teachers who, when quizzed randomly, know quite a great deal about subjects they teach.
Ofcourse they would, a history teacher obviously has a passion for history, but comparing an amature like a teacher with an academic is crazy.

At my school, one science teacher had some decent qualifications. She knew her shit. she just couldnt teach it very well.

The shit teachers he mentioned are in the minority [but they do exist i had a few of them back in the day] . Teachers know what they are talking about and they know a great deal about their subject within pretty small confines. This doesnt make them academics.

That's the same as academics, most of them are very specialised. It's a matter of a teacher knowing the subject, something they do by using the books that academics have collated based on their research.

They're not the same thing but at the same time, a teacher is not a glorified babysitter.

A good teacher is someone who knows the syllabus inside out, has a working knowledge of exams and their trends and also has a very broad knowledge of related subjects. For example, a good grade 12 maths should have a very strong grasp of upper end undergraduate maths, not just maths from the high school syllabus. But this is off topic and I'll leave it at that.
Wrong, a good teacher is not purely based on what they know, but also on how they can communicate and 'teach' a class this knowledge.

You'll find quite a number of teachers know their shit, but have a problem communicating it, as society and the respective students shift attitudes and learning style. This is why you'll see quite a great amount being placed on more than just syllabi but also on tactics of teaching various different castes of students.

You'll also find that academics have an audience of academics, of like minded and similar 'level' of knowledge on a particular subject. Teachers for the most part have to assume that students either have little to no experience/knowledge or very limited ones at that.

The terms academic and teacher are not mutually exclusive of each other.

On topic:

Yeah it's fine, just prioritise what you want, and make sure you don't break up 2-3 weeks before the HSC begins.

Is having a girlfriend/boyfriend during the last 2 years of high school worth it. Is it bad coz: you get distracted.... orr is it good: coz you have somebody to vent to and get distracted by.

What do you guys reckon... I mean we most probably are going to break up with them neway.. is running the risk of a partner.. worth it?
God i always think of that. YES they are a distraction and they annoy the fuk out of me cause my boyfriend wants to talk late at night eventhough i have like exams tha nextt day. But then again when its 1am in tha morning and i stress out i can ring him up balling my eyes out and he somehow manages to callllm me down :D. But yes he is a distraction but good in the same way.

Love
