Hi!

I am a prospective student commencing undergrad study in 2020, however, I am not eligible for HECS and HELP loans since I am a permanent resident and not an Australian citizen. If I apply for citizenship this year (when I turn 18), am I able to apply for HECS for the remainder of the academic year? I'm not too sure how long it takes for citizenship applications to be approved, but from my own knowledge it takes a couple of months to a year. Does anyone know people who have been through a similar situation as me and have changed their citizenship status to become eligible for HECS? I know I would probably have to bring this up with the uni I am going to, but just wanted to see other people's opinions/experiences.

Much appreciated. :)

What is your current citizenship? Have you resided in Australia for the last 10 years? There may be residency requirements, in addition to citizenship requirements.

Realistically your citizenship will not be finalised within the next year (i.e 2020).

You can change from Fee Paying to HECs throughout your degree.

I have resided in Australia for 16 years, but I have an overseas passport.

oh okay, so I’ll probably have to wait until 2021 to apply for HECS.

thank you !!
