I need 120 units to satisfy the combined degree of arts and law:
This includes a minimum of 72 credit points in the law degree
24 credit points to complete a major in arts

72+24=96 credit points altogether

This means I would have 24 units leftover, which I think means u could technically major or at least minor in another subject in the arts degree. Is this right?

I was considering this because I am interested in policy development but I think it is unnecessary to major in public policy, law and governance in the arts degree as I am already doing a law degree where some of these subjects are compulsory or electives and I could study some of these units in the politics major in order to have the prerequisites or knowledge of policy making.
I was considering studying one major and one minor in either politics, human geography or international relations. Is this possible? Thanks

Also, how many electives in a combined degree do you have to pursue non-major related units

Hey there, :)

I see what you're asking and it makes sense calculation-wise but, as far as I know, having another major is not possible because of the people/planet unit requirements. These have to come from electives and cannot both be from the same faculty as your degree or a part of your major/degree requirements. Therefore, if you were to use up the remainder of your credit points with another major, you would not be able to complete the compulsory 2 people/planet units (6 credit points).

A minor, however, is only half the size of a major (12 cp) and so would still leave you with four units, two of which would be the people and planet units.

Regarding electives, your degree is 120 credit points. Within that, you have 72 Law credit points (a few of which are kind of electives), a 24 credit point arts major and 6 credit points of people and planet units. Add this up and you have 102 credit points, leaving you with 18 cp (6 units) to play around with.

I hope that helps you a bit but I would definitely recommend sitting down in person with someone at Macquarie to ensure you meet all the requirements for your degree and aren't missing any vital information which could affect you later on. :)

So does that mean that if I wanted to do a people unit in human geography which can be studied in the arts degree I can't? Because I actually picked that as a people unit initially and my e-student timetable planner allowed me to take it, but I deleted after because I was still making up my mind.
Because I considered that if a people unit was the first unit of the human geography major and I decided I really liked it, it could technically also count towards credit points for a minor in human geography so I would have more left over units. So a people unit would also contribute to satisfying a minor.

This is only a consideration as I am debating whether to minor in international business or international communication...there are just so many options! :)

I'll definitely call mac uni up to see how it goes.

Potentially yes.

Plus you can always slightly extend your degree progression (and add more units in) if you delay doing certain core subjects.

sweetalmond,
you can do that human geography unit as your people unit, as long as it is NOT a part of one of your major units or a foundation unit for the degree (e.g. BCom has a bunch of required units separate from majors). Therefore, if you complete a major in human geography, then you CANNOT count one of those units as your people unit, but if you major in something else, the unit CAN count as people unit.

i.e. People/planet units must NOT be part of a major, and major units cannot count as people/planet.

And yes, as BLIT2014 mentions, technically a double major in the BA of a double degree is possible, but it might extend the duration of your degree as you would otherwise not have enough space to fit in all of the required units, like people/planet.
