hey,

ok so just now i was parked outside the shops for like 10 mins right, then wen i got back into my car to try start it... it wouldnt start! i tried about 4 times before i could start it... it either wouldnt start at all wen i turned the key, or it would stall straight away because the idle was so low. on the last try, as i released the key i revved the accelerator, and it was fine. was that just a fluke or did revving it actually help?

my car is an automatic btw..

its only happened twice though. sometimes in the morning when its really cold, i have to turn the key for longer then usual, and the idle is really low but it doesnt stall.

also, sometimes my steering is REALLY REALLY stiff, but only ever at low speeds (ie. when parking)... the power steering fluid has been topped up, and its still like this sometimes?

so yeah, anybody who can offer some advice or anything on these problems, its much appreciated. :)

HAHAHA i just saw ur signature and i was like :O WTF! :(

lol, ahh its a 1998 vw passat

the previous owner said it wouldnt start in 40+ degree heat
but we've since took it to the mechanic who supposedly replaced the part of the engine that was causing this

other than that, i dont think theres been any other past problems

it could be many things. when you tried starting it wen the car wouldnt turn on did it make a clicking noise? then turn off? the clicking noise could be from a battery that needs replacing because theres not enough power to turn the starter over to start the engine sum times revving the car while starting helps it turn on

theres many different things it could be.

could be the starter motor . if u locate it under the car gently tap with a hammer and it should start . but needs to be replaced...

fayad158 and sir-study-alot are both wrong and know nothing about cars gurl

your best option is just getting it checked out by a mechanic. Just get them to have a look at if without fixing it first then ask around to find out who can fix it the cheapest

hope it goes well for you :)

Mine does the same occasionally.

Just yesterday I tried to start the car as I usually would and it didn't start. Tried again and it kinda chugged and bubbled into life, so I gave it a (small) rev. Was fine after that. It just had a slightly higher idle than normal for about 10 seconds, then back to normal.

No idea what is causing it.

um you obviously know nothing about cars and sir-study-alot could be right it may be a faulty starter motor. My dads an auto electrician and my uncle is a mechanic sorry I cant say exactly whats wrong with the car, there's at least 5 things it could be, it may need need new spark plugs or seeing as its a 1998 model its fuel injected and one of the fuel injectors could be plugged up and thanks for that mad advice obviously the car does need to be checked by a mechanic but anyway after you get it checked could you please tell us what the problem was?
thanks

Yeah, but I highly doubt that you should..

I had to admit I laughed though. :haha:

Since it's a European car, I'm assuming it's going to be notoriously expensive to get it fixed. :?

haha sorry i didnt realise that because your dad is an auto electrician and your uncle is a mechanic that you could diagnose cars without ever inspecting it, maybe you should start a business that specialises in diagnostics without inspections hahah

your 2 suggestions were it might be a fucked battery, so revving will help lol wtf and hit the starter motor with a hammer hahahah fuck

so obviously, dont you think, seeing as you know nothing like most of the people on bos, that her only option is to get an actual mechanic to inspect it?

are you fucking stupid? IT COULD BE A FAULTY STARTER MOTOR even though tapping on it wont help hes still right. didn't u read the parts where i said "i cant say exactly whats wrong with the car" and "it could be at least 5 different things" and i continued to say things it could be such as the spark plugs? Of course it would have to be inspected by a mechanic! stop being a fucken smartass you idiot

She asked what the problem could be, I'm merely answering her question for her information
