omg me too! gasp, but the uai for the combined vis comm/int studies is ridiculously high! It was 97.95 last year and the year before was a miracle at 91.7, and in 2005 it was 99, all the years before it's been 98+ :burn: :burn: :burn: :burn:

Re: Career Choices: What do you want to do in uni/tafe/the workforce?

Few years ago I dreamed of being a professional basketball player in the NBA. I wanted to play college basketball in the states. Well, it's not going to happen so when I graduate, I think I would like to work in firms such as the big four accounting firms or anything similar to that nature and if I get the chance to use my engineering degree I would be happy to work in companies related to technology like IBM, Dell, Microsoft, etc. And If I get a chance to study in the states for my graduate degree, I would want to work for NASA, that will be a blast!

For the mean time, I'm trying to get vacation work from pwc. And I'm only in my second year.

Re: Career Choices: What do you want to do in uni/tafe/the workforce?

I've never said that to anyone in real life. But playing college basketball is definitely a possibility if I can manage to have an exchange for one year.
I would imagine people would laugh at me if I tell them that lol. Of course provided they have never seen my game.

You guys are probably not pro basketball players so I understand why you would think any foreigners making into the nba is near to impossible. The thing is, if someone can get into the nba, his skills would have to match the roster of the team he's trying to get into. You gotta have connections or any coach that saw you play and liked it. That's really important. If a coach sees you might not have say the physical stamina to withstand playing in the nba, no matter are skillful you are, can may not have a chance. Conversely, if you're a good centre that can't shoot, and the team is a fast tempo team that stresses on fast execution or the team already has a decent centre, you will not get in either.

A lot of guys that might seem to be great basketball players from a newbie's pespective but for those that knows the game can tell a lot of weaknesses in techniques, fundamentals, awareness and IQ. So it's not really just about physical strength. You gotta have things balanced out to play in the nba or college basketball.

I haven't played this year coz of knee tendonitis. But I would like to get back into training before the tryout at the end of this year.
Anyway, I've played for the under 18, 19s a couple of years ago.

dare to dream...

if your going to dream you might as well dream big aye?
I never quiet understand why some people say that.

My dreams of achieving certain goals usually based on a sense of feeling that there is a reality to it. There there isn't, I wouldn't have dreamed of it in the first place.

For example, if I want to become a basketball player or a sprinter but I got an acl injury, no I wouldn't even think about rehab let along pro ball. But If I'm healthy, I would think about how I may achieve it. I would probably imagine setting daily goals on my training schedules and what I would want to have achieved by the end of the week, month and year. If I think it's possible, then I will dream about it.

Now I don't know much about atheltics but I often hear people say you gotta start training from an early age, 17 is too late to start getting into it. But I wonder how is it not possible if given the right the correct diet, training, natural talent, passion and a reasonable amount of time maybe 2 years to eventually become competitive.

Just to remind you all, Dennis Rodman started playing basketball when he was 20 years old.
Jordan got cut in his high school team the first time he went for the team tryout.
And many other examples you may have gathered.

To save people from dying, to cure the sick, for money, for status, for the knowledge, to fufill their dreams (some might disagree)

The only reason why people do medicene or law is because of the money. Although that is not always the case, particuarly with medicene, an overwhelming majority of people want to do medicene or law for nothing more than the pay that goes with it.

I wouldn't say an overwhelming majority. People who do that often drop out half-way through their course. Of course, if they do end up graduating, they can go on to have unsatisfying lives.

if the pay wasn't as good as it is, we would have a severe lack of healthcare workers... besides the self satisfaction overall it's a pretty thankless job, trust me i know.

Re: Career Choices: What do you want to do in uni/tafe/the workforce?

My dads an orthopedic surgeon and says the same thing, he wanted to help people which he did... but I don't think it's worth it. Some weeks he would do 80 hours as he was on call a lot, thankfully he didn't suffer stress or anything as he retired early.

Sure the money was fantastic and people had a very high level of respect for him, but he didn't get to see family much while he was working which is really important.

i suppose when you talk about pay you have doctors (specialists more so?), dentists, optometrists maybe? there's not a whole lot of money in the health sector. like for example nurses and all that aren't in it for the money.
