When you heat a carbonate, you get an oxide and carbon dioxide gas is also evolved- you can test with limewater for its presence

You probably used too much carbonate, so when it was heated, too much carbon dioxide was produced, and then the pressure built up and it exploded. I hope u weren't hurt
