if you want your ca/cpa look at the respective websites and look at the exemption subjects required at your uni. for instance at unsw you would do legt1711 or infs1602 first up.

I chose fundamentals of management for my elective for semester one. I'm a bit worried now because people are saying it's not practical and a waste of time. The reason I didn't choose finance is because I only did 2U math in the hsc and math has always been my weakest subject. I got 82, which isn't to bad, but I don't think it's good enough to be able to do finance:(

I have enrolled, so I think its to late now. What does everyone think? I want to do a double major and I was thinking about doing accouting also. I thought management would be good:confused:

You can change your courses for ages yet... Just 'drop' the course and choose a different one.

---

Personally this is how I attacked things after I got it down to 2 from 4 choices:

Accounting - Very basic/flexible, compulsory for the cadetship

Business Law - Probably a very interesting subject but I'd get outgunned by the law degree people if I were applying for a job in which it mattered.. Already doing 3 subjects for CA to satisfy the desire for general knowledge

Finance - Popular but potentially rewarding if you can set yourself apart from the rest... maybe decent general knowledge? Probably better at securing specialised jobs whereas other majors aren't useful in doing this = more possibilities

Management - A skill to develop not learn... I figure studying management is useless after I did some research on a few different management consultancy company sites which all stressed that no academic background in management is required...

So yeah... Accounting Finance unless I have a change of heart later on...

That's because most people's skill sets allow them to handle subjects such as accounting, but not that many people have more holistic skill sets for marketing and advertising. I am in the latter group, and wouldn't be able to handle accounting, finance, or any similar majors.

Another scary thing about marketing is the self-confidence that is needed to succeed in the field. A lot of people don't like having the burden of potentially making a decision that will lead to a product's failure.

ummm.. for comm students doing business law as a major, why do you guys do it when you can't practise law when u grad? does that mean comm/law students should do it?

also how difficult is the math in finance? i got a raw score of 37 in methods last year after trying twice (failure i know)..

it would be very suitable for com/law students, but it's also suitable as a second major for people interested in opening up their own business.
the maths in finance apparently gets quite complex

the maths in finance is quite reasonable. if you did 2u maths you should be able to understand it.

what's 2u math? in vce, hardest math is specialist math, 2nd hardest is methods. so is 2u the hardest or 2nd hardest?

A few of my mates did management and found it very bad. As with finance maths I did 2U and got a band 5, the maths is mainly newly taught formulas so as long as you work hard you should be fine, although the first finance subject is mainly theory anyway.

Is economics really that interesting??
without having done it, I would guess that junior and intermediate economics is fantastic, but then apparently the subjects evolve into boring maths. i saw a senior econ text, and it was all numbers and stuff.

I think doing an IT related degree would be smarter. BIS, from what I understand, is best to supplement such majors from other faculties.

Uber- I did Further Maths in VCE, and had no worries with uni finance maths whatsoever. Admittedly I got a study score of 38, but I don't think that mattered. Basically, the maths in uni finance is pretty simple. There are some reasonably complex formulas to remember sometimes, but they don't require a detailed knowledge of algebra or anything like that, only the very basics.
