Hey everyone, I have to make my subject choices for year 12 2012 really soon and I was wondering if I could have some guidance :)
I currently do:
Ext 1 English
Ext 1 Maths
Chemistry
Economics
Legal Studies
Studies of religion 1 (compulsory)
Originally, I wanted to drop chemistry and gain a unit of english (extension 2) but lately I've been hearing bad things about legal scaling, and I really want a 95+ ATAR which I am not even sure is possible without Extension 2 maths... so what would you do in this situation? I don't like legal or economics much but I am good at them. I'm OK at chemistry too and I know I can go well when I study. Thankyou

Do you really dislike chem? If you know you can do well if you study why not keep it and just drop something else?

But to answer your question: You can gain a 95+ atar with any subject provided you are good at it. Scaling won't effect you too much if you're consistently at the top in rankings.

Good luck :D

Thanks for that, also should I take legal studies or extension 2 english if I like them the same but my rank is better in legal?
I wouldn't be worrying about any ranking if you're going to do extension 2: the people who do best at this are rarely the people who do best at advanced/extension 1. Your marks will all depend on how much effort you put into your Major Work and how good IT is. You need to have a clear idea and make it specific. Don't join it with no sense of direction because you'll end up wasting your time and frustrating yourself. Once you have your concept down you have as much time as you want to refine it - this is what gets the best marks. Too many people still don't know what they're doing by the last assessment.

The main thing is people who do it for 'scaling' or whatever prestiege it is supposed to bring don't do well. If you're not interested in it then don't bother. If you are interested in something specific that you can turn into a Major Work in one of the categories, THEN do it.

Or, if you really like writing - take it up anyway because your idea may pop into your head when you're staring at a door handle.

True story.
