Depends on the club, some are active, some make you pay and then disappear for the rest of the year... *shakes fist at the mq filo club*

ASSOC is a "student society" (aka a club). No it isn't compulsory to join but you'd just be missing out on stuff.

To the later, perhaps.

assoc is a heaps active club. its not compulsory for actuaries to join but you'd be pretty anti social to not join. ur only payn 10 bux in first yr and u never pay again. from an actuary's point of view, u get free access to 2 career events each yr where u can mix and mingle with corporate reps at the end. its a good way to establish contacts and find out wot they lookn for when u apply for a job. 1/2 the time these guys will be the same ppl interviewing u.

from social point of view we're pretty up there in the most active clubs...theres always something on. whether it be juz casual bball or cricket games where any1 can come and play, mixed pool competition, bball and soccer comp against unsw, bbqs, annual dinner, ...and lots of competitons to win stuff...

website is www.mqassoc.org
theres a pic gallery so check that out if u got time.

I think most of their events run at a loss...and the deficit is covered by sponsor money. Well at least thats how the law society works, I assume ASSOC would be similar.

i think i said our revenues and expenses run into 10s of thousands. we dun make a loss of 10s of thousands hehe. we do make losses on most events, but only by hundreds.

We get most of our money from SAM at macquarie and corporate sponsors. SAM gives out subsidies to clubs depending on the size and rep of the club.

for instance, meet the professionals night (one of our career events) is sponsored by CBA. ino the figures coz i organised it last yr. it was around $350 to book venue from SAM. then we paid $9 per person for food - oysters, chicken skewers, and tempora prawns (you pretty much got ur 10 bux memebership fee back already). Amd drinks cost us $9 a jub. About 180 ppl turned up, and the end will was around $2500. CBA paid $1500 and we paid the rest.

something bigger like annual ball...we had classic solutions, IAA, zurich sponsoring. so we used that money to reduce ticket prices. it was at a 4star hotel, 3 course meal. tickets sold for juz $50.

i think if u a person who likes to participate in events then u'd really like assoc...but there r ppl who juz join and never come and do anything. i dun encourage that, but even if u do do that u dun lose much either coz u get our quarterly publication and copy of yrbook. ..and it costs like $1 to print 1 copy of the newsletter and gonna spend like $7 to print yrbook.
