Concept of Journey in Films, Songs, Articles?? (1 Viewer)

So, I've got an assessment where I've got to evaluate the aspect of Journey in 3 different texts. Each text has to be a different text type (AHH!!) and I have to explain the techniques used to portray Journey in each!!

My question is, with films and articles, how are you meant to explain the techniques? Especially film techniques - how do they connect with Journey?

I'm doing a South-Korean movie called "Hansel & Gretel" and I've wrote a bit on (what I think) is the aspect of a METAPHYSICAL journey in the film. I don't know where to begin with for explaining film techniques!

I'm struggling a lot actually.. I don't have anyone to assess my work for me, I don't know how to write each evaluation differently, because I know I'll say the same things - e.g this scene demonstrates that every journey has an intersection, this scene shows that it doesn't matter about the destination but rather the process, or this shows that every journey gets interrupted, etc, etc.

And how would you assess an article?

The Texts I'm doing/thinking of are

Feature Article - Jelena Dokic's Australian Open "JOURNEY" (not sure about this one, but there's TONS of articles online, I don't know if I can call it a FEATURE one though)

Film - Hansel & Gretel (S-Korean Thriller)

Song - Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun

Novel - ???

I to break it to you, but what you just wrote is absolutely bad, you MUST give a detailed analysis of the techniques and link this to your thesis(the main point you are trying to say about Journeys, e.g. Journeys lead to a transforation within the traveller etc)

But how? Where do I start? How do I relate a film technique to an aspect of journey? HOW?

comment on things like soundtrack, camera angles, costumes, dialogue, casting etc etc and use that stuff to answer the question like this example I made up. I did physical journeys and the film I used is Master & Commander

The journey in ‘Master and Commander’ is physical sea journey motivated by war seen in the strong desire to win the Napoleonic Wars and patriotism to their country. This is underlined through songs such as ‘Don’t Forget Your Old Shipmates’. A scene where this is suggested is when a sailor by the name of Plaice totally believes that Hollam is ‘Jonah’ this convinces the crew and plot to get rid of Hollam. The silence and acting gives a sense of fear about Hollam as sailors in that context were deeply superstitious as ‘Jonah’ was a biblical symbol of bad luck. Another obstacle that is dealt with is the sea itself as a journey like this presents many dangers especially with the rough conditions it can provide. A scene where this is seen is when a crewmember was lost at sea. Different hues of blue are used to highlight the mood of the journey where a darker shade of blue symbolised the danger and the long shot of the sea further reinforces the danger as it adds to ferocity of the ocean.

technical analysis is the most important bit. it's the part where you say why the technique is significant to the concept. follow this structure and you won't go wrong.

sometimes you are too general. like i had that problem HEAPS when i was in year 12. my teacher kept telling me to be more specific. i think you need to be more specific in some areas. like when you say 'in various scenes'. you should probably expand on that! but when i say specific, i don't mean long-winded. keep it concise.
