First and foremost, I definately wasn't speeding nor did I run two red lights. My mates with me in the car at the time think that it is a prank as they know that I didn't speed nor did I run two red lights. My mate also thought that I was joking when I told him this as I didn't commit any of the above offences.

I haven't heard from them since they called me and they told me if anything happens that they will get back to me. Will they send me a fine and not bother to call me?

What if it was a cop that saw me do the offence? Why didn't he chase after me?

Thats good then. They wont send a fine, they wont call you again because they dont even have proof that you broke the law[cause if they did you would allready have lost your license]

How did they manage to get my number plate and details if I ran two red lights and reached high speeds? Might have mixed up my number plate with someone elses.

Its one of your mates (or not) who knows your number plates and knows you were driving on saturday night.

I'd be inclined to take a visit to the local police station and make a statement about the phone call. Get the pranksters up on charges of impersonating a police officer.

Police might call you for minor things such as your wallet being found on the street, but as for traffic offences of this manner, it'd be in a letter or they'd actually come and speak to you in person...

... that would be a baaaaad idea 29er. the last thing you would want is for your mate's house number to come up. and you didnt know it was your friend because obviously they arent going to tell you it was them, and obviously they are going to milk the shit out of you if they realise you think it is real.

the only time i have ever heard of police calling people up is for stuff like finding your lost car/wallet/belonging that has been identified as yours. that, and when they tell you that you either come to them or they will escort you in a police car. at which point they lock you up for a few hours depending on what you have done >.>

Tonight I recieved a call from the 'Cops'. They said who they were, they knew I was at the city on Saturday night, they knew the street I live in and they told my mother that 'your son' was speeding (maybe because of my p-plates). They rekon I ran a couple red lights and went 36 over the limit on Saturday night. They said I was reklessly driving. They said their colleague had seen me do it. I'm not sure why he didn't pull me over had he seen me do it. They kept asking me if I was doing any of this stuff and I kept replying to 'I'm pretty sure i didn't, 'no it wasn't me' or 'i don't think i did'. I was obviously shocked as they were telling me this. They told me that they will call me if any thing else happens. I had a chat to a few of my mates in the car and they are positive I didn't run any red lights or speed excessively over.
What do youse think?
Prank call? Or is this really the cops?
What should I expect to happen in the coming day/weeks?

It's a prank.

If some of your friends don't own up to it, then you need to contact your local police station. They will get into contact with the phone company and they will seize records. They will prosecute who ever did it for impersonating a police officer. Press your friends to tell the truth, tell them if they don't own up that you will be going to the police.

And if they had his number plate (which would be how they got his phone number, assuming this isn't a prank) they could do any number of things. For reckless driving i would issue a Field court attendance notice.

They have a hard enough time booking you even if they get it on radar.

If the exact speed limit of the person isn't known to us (from Lidar, Radar or driving along side the car), then we can book them with dangerous driving or drive at a speed dangerous. These are easy charges to prove.

You can't let them take advantage of your lack of legal knowledge. If they're ever trying to get you to admit to something it's because they don't have ground to book you, so never admit

My parents own my car.. So if i go through a red light the RTA has no way of knowing that i did it (except if my parents dob me in). So if you don't own the car (the number plate wouldn't show up your name) then it's definately going to be a prank.

I'd take a stab and say that the only way they could have known that their 'son (ie me)' had been driving the car was through the p-plates displayed on the car.
I'd take it as a prank as I haven't been contacted by the police nor have received a fine yet and whoever did it did a damn good job in tricking me.

CIVID, ur a fucken moron if you think it was actually the cops. If they seen ya, they would of booked you on the spot. They got your number, so they must have got ur numberplate, meaning they would of come to your house and booked you there, or even sent a fine in the mail, instead of a bullshit call.
