hi all, I'm looking to get an asus f3jp notebook
http://www.computeronline.com.au/notebook_list.php?n_id=0

The specs are Radeon x1700 (256mb), 15.4 inch screen, 80gb hdd, and 2gb ram.

I can get either one with a core2duo 1.66ghz ($1600) or one with a core2duo 1.73 ghz ($1800). I don't know if I should pay an extra $200 for the core2duo 1.73, i am using this laptop for uni work, surfing net, watching dvds, playing games, I would'nt run too many applications at once, so would the extra upgrade make much of a difference? Please help. Thanx in adv.

In reality you probably wont notice a speed difference between the 1.66gHz and the 1.73gHz, as long as you get the 2GB ram model it will run windows vista and any application you want for ages to come.

Let me put it this way, the CPU isnt usually the bottleneck, its the RAM or the GFX or the HDD speed or anything else. That means that such a small increase isnt usually worth it, and if it was, well you can easily overclock 100MHZ without any strain.

I have the F3JP with 1.66 in it. It's a beautiful machine. Can't wait until I get my second gig of RAM though.

Bench marks are useless they will show that one chip is 1% or 2% faster than the other at pure number crunching. What counts is real world performance and in this case the difference is will be entirely unnoticeable.

You need to get in contact with the company because there is an obvious spec-listing error. The only 1.73GHz Core 2 is the T5300, but it has a slower 533MHz FSB.. so immediately I felt suspicious that such an 'upgrade' could cost an extra whopping $200.

On further inspection, the specs actually say the T5600, which is 1.83GHz, NOT 1.73GHz. THAT upgrade is certainly more reasonable in regards to the extra $200 required.

Also note there are other differences between the two F3Jps. The $200 extra also comes with XP Pro instead of Vista Home Premium and gives you a bigger hard disk (120GB vs. 80GB).

So if you have the extra cash, don't want Vista (like me) and would like a bigger hard disk, then the $1800 deal is arguably better.

But here's the catch: The site actually says that the cheaper F3Jp is ~$1500, not $1600. So either you made a mistake or they raised the price.

Hi BBS,

I noticed from one of my posts that you have the same laptop model as me, the f3jp. I noticed something a bit weird abt mine and was wondering if its supposed to be that way. I looked at 'my computer' and noticed that there were two hard drives on it, one was 'vista os' with 45gb, the other drive had 25gb on it. So altogether thats 70gb right? But my laptop is supposed to be 80gb, is your one like this? Thanx for your help.

Yeah for marketing purpose 1 GB= 1000MB while technically it should be 1024MB. Your computer measures in technical terms hence the difference between actual space available as measured by your computer and as measured by manufacturer/marketer. Besides, 5 GB might just be hidden as a recovery partition where your recovery software are saved. You cant usually access this unless your computer crash. ;)
