Creative writing in exam conditions? (1 Viewer)

I simply don't understand how they expect us to be creative in 40 minutes. You need to build your character, plot, etc. in such a short amount of time.
How do you prepare for the creative writing section in an exam? Apart from simply remembering a story you wrote and moulding it around the stimulus or question.

Most people come up with a few generic story ideas, and pick the one that most fits the criteria.
