Also guys, for question 1h, just sketch the equations onto the number plane - there's actually three intercept points.

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon

I think there is an error in 1h. You can't find the points of intersections

Look above, that should be the only problem. I have solutions to scan if you guys want them.

Nope by solving the equating the two functions you should be able to get 3x's but.. idk perhaps I'm doing it wrong?

You're right. I said for 1h, just sketch the equations. Ignore the labelling of intersection points.

I didn't actually really make my test that hard. I followed the format of tests that my school traditionally keeps. Meant to be easy and designed to be friendly until the last few questions. It's nowhere near as insane as carrot's papers.

Ohh I thought you meant that sketch the equations TO find the points of intersection. My bad :S

draw an equilateral triangle, draw a perpendicular line in the middle bisecting the base of equi. triangle, then use pythagoras

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon

uhh just curious how to you prove a function? Question 2a
It doesn't say prove, it says explain why. This means it should refer to the definition of what a function is.

Re: 2012 Year 9 &10 Mathematics Marathon

Decent questions in the upper tier for year 10 questions.
Pretty straightforward if you know your stuff and got enough practice of the year 10 syllabus tho.
Will be challenging to most year 10's at first sight but it isn't that bad - just the questions intimidates people

Good paper Demento
