It's going to be my first day teaching at a tutoring college tomorrow (year 6) :) so just wanted to know what you think makes an outstanding tutor

Best tutors would have the following qualities:
  1. Excellent knowledge of the materials (whether it is Mathematics or English).
  2. Resourcefulness (e.g. notes, exam papers).
  3. Lenience (to certain extent).
  4. Affable personality.
  5. Reasonable price.
  6. Flexibility (when it comes to time management).
  7. Ongoing support & help.

ive had an outstanding tutor, and the qualities that made him stand out are:

- excellent knowledge, beyond what is required by syllabus/guidelines

- an ability to explain things simply and efficiently

- able to answer difficult questions (DO NOT ever turn down a question if you dont know the answer - just say you don't know. That in itself is a quality)

- has patience when the student has trouble understanding concepts

- challenges the student to think critically (doesn't just spoonfeed answers)

- is not cocky about their achievements and greatness (modesty is a thumbs up)

Definately agree. When you get a teacher that just tries to bullshit their way through with repeated 'umms...yeah...k...umm', it just muddles you up even further. :uhhuh:
