I know basically what non destructive and destructive testing are but I've stumbled across a 5 marker in a paper asking for a detailed example of each to be included.
Anyone know a good description of the 2 testing methods and syllabus experiments or procedures which involve them. I think AAS is considered non destructive as such a small amount of the sample is required, I can't think of a good example of destructive though.

I thought AAs woudl be destructive because you're setting it on fire.

I believe AAS is not destructive as you are taking a very small sample of the source and not contaminating the source in any way. However, the fact that you are vaporising and spraying the sample in a flame puts it in a different perspective. An example of destructive testing in Chemistry is scraping the rust off an artefact to test for ions like carbonate and iron. Note that it's the act of scraping the rust that's the main destructive part of it.

non destructive tests could also include things like smelling the sample, identifying the colour of the sample before adding anything to it, feeling any heat the sample emits etc

destructive testing would be the addition of pH universal indivator for example, or anything in general that would alter the original sample.
