Well I don't do comm but usually a study guide tells you what textbook chapters/questions correspond to certain topics. This may not be the same here...

A study guide generally gives you a brief summary of the important points. There are many details only available if you read the textbook.

IMO just focus on buying the mandatory/required material and don't worry about the optional/recommended ones. They just support the main textbook (which along with the other "required" material contains everything you need) but don't add that much value especially if you don't end up using them. Unless something is on the required list I never bought it.
