Win98 never had USB support to start with. I think its more that iTunes only works on XP/2000, so you must have those for iTunes/iPod to work.
Do you think it would work with the Winamp plugin?

There was one of the earlier versions of vpod made to work with '95 and '98, that might be worth a look.

In that case, it might sound like hard disk damage, have you tried formatting the iPod?

That I'm not sure, though I'm pretty sure Apple wouldn't make it so easy!
