On an individual scale, not really, as the standards to make aligned marks in each course are almost independent of each other. But on a larger scale (say the whole state) it will. If all Extension 1 people do worse than the 2 unit only people in the 2 unit exam, then Extension 1 will scale worse than 2 unit....lol. However, that's extemely unlikely....;)

But then u need 2 remember that ur 2U score will count 2 66.6667% of ur total maths mark. Only MX1 is only marked out of 50 unless ur doing MX2...

I don't think your teacher is lieing, if you're doing 3unit, than you 3unit mark will scale up or down depends on you 2unit mark.

If you're doing 4unit, than your 4unit mark will scale up or down depending on your 3unit mark, and your 2unit mark will...well not exist, because 4unit people don't do 2unit tests, however from memory, a 4unit's person 2unit mark can be estimated to something very very high, based off on their 3 unit tests.

That is incorrect.

Your 4unit mark is independent of your 2unit and 3unit mark.
Your 3unit mark is independent of your 2unit and 4unit mark.
Your 2unit mark is independent of your 3unit and 4unit mark.

I'm a curious person, and I'd certainly like to know why I was lied to, were that in fact the case.
It is possible that the teachers don't know what they're talking about. My food tech teacher didn't even know scaling existed. The DT teachers also said DT scales very well, which is the biggest lie I have ever heard. Thats why so many people do DT/textiles at my school.

BIGGEST LOL!!!

No offence: Textile has got one of the shittest scaling ever!!! Even if you come first in the state for that, I would not feel sense of achievement! And even if you do come first, that's like less than 90%.

EDIT: I am sorry. Textiles actually had better scaling than I thought. The top mark was 46/50, which is 92/100.

Are you guys to tell us, that all the maths teachers are lieing about this?

The obvious question is why ?
Your teachers are ignorant. I've never heard a teacher claim such a thing, personally, and my own delving into the nature of the HSC, scaling, and maths specifically indicates strongly that one's individual marks are all completely independent of one another.

They aren't lying deliberately; they are uninformed.

you serious? I had an ex student tell me that you need to go better in your 3 unit than your 4 unit and then i checked with my maths teacher and he said that was right..

I mean it seems logical, how bad would it look if you can do 4 unit extremely well but suck at 3 unit? I'm guessing there'd be some serious questioning about your 4 unit mark since almost half of it is harder 3 unit...

That is true.

The scaling between a 70 in 4unit to an 80 is miniscule when 3unit is taken into account.

Also, 3unit should be easy marks if you're doing 4unit, and for most people 3unit will be their highest mark in the HSC.

It does, but only when it comes to the scaled marks in the actual HSC, if it is a trend across the board. If it's just you, it shouldn't really matter as it doesn't prove the 3u exam is easier. You'll just get a low mark in 2u.

That said, if you can't get good marks in 2u you probably should not be doing 3u.

p.s. "lieing" is spelt "lying."

Basically 4unit's scaling is really high, so a 70-80 mark won't have much difference since its one of the highest scaling subjects. Not many students do it either, as opposed to 3unit.

3unit has a high (but relatively lower than 4unit) scaling, a 70 mark as opposed to 80 could be 2,000 ranks wheras for 4u the rank diff would be 500 or so (generalising here).

read the faq's, im tad tired so cbf explaining TOO much.

Extension 2 scaling is affected by the performance of ALL Extension 2 people on the Extension 1 exam. If only a couple of Extension 2 people do badly in Extension 1, it would have negligible effect on the scaling.

This is what teachers are probably referring to:

The reason Extension 1 scales higher than 2 unit is because the Extension 1 people do better OVERALL in the 2 unit exam, compared to the 2 unit only people. The reason Extension 2 scales higher than Extension 1 is because the Extension 2 people do better OVERALL in the Extension 1 exam, compared to the Extension 1 only peple.

Consider these hypothetical (but very unlikely) situations:
- If ALL Extension 1 people do WORSE than the 2 unit only people in the 2 unit exam, then Extension 1 will scale WORSE than 2 unit.
- If ALL Extension 2 people do WORSE than the Extension 1 only people in the Extension 1 exam, then Extension 2 will scale WORSE than Extension 1

But in reality, what are chances of the above scenarios happening? lol

If you do badly in 2 unit, but better in Extension 1, then that's your problem. Your 2 unit mark has no direct impact on your Extension 1 mark as AN INDIVIDUAL. However, if EVERYONE does bad in 2 unit, but better in Extension 1, then there is some impact (though such a situation is extremely unlikely).
