Have you played Planescape: Torment? As far as games go it's pretty fucking deep. The central question of the game seems to be "what can change the nature of a man?" and the two answers put forward (but not really confirmed) as the most valid contenders are 'belief' and 'regret'.
Indeed a central theme of the game is how belief shapes the world. In the game this had physical manifestations - if enough people believe in something strongly, it will happen. But it touches on the broader issue of the role of belief in human psychology. Very compelling.
Plus the game is set in the Planescape multiverse. By far the best D&D setting so far.
