hi im currently enrolled to economics but some people brought up a topic which raised some concern for me, that is, is economics just a reject of the commerce degree? cos i heard from people that this course is for the not-as-bright students (since the uai is lower) but the course is the same (thats if u major in economics). is economics really that shame? i hope not =(

you're stupid for believing them. they are different degrees.

economists = thinkers.

economists = wannabe mathematicians. Have a look at the famous economists and nobel prize winners.

as with the difference between B.Comm B.Eco at UNSW, whilst there are definitely some people who prefer B.Eco over B.Com, there's usually some truth in these rumours

From my own observations, Mainly five types of people do BEc:

1. People who didn't get the Comm UAI, and got into Eco in order to attempt transfer.

2. People who take their economics seriously and professionally, and want to attain a fully professional - especially maths (metrics) oriented degree to get into places like the RBA.

3. A rare group of people who want a more tradional approach to their business degree, and usually study diverse subjects within the field of economics specifically.

4. People in combined degrees, especially law, who wish to do it over Comm for reasons 2 or 3.

5. People who enrolled for number 1 but decided to stick with BEc after they found out in first year that an economics major is probably the best compliment to any other specialization.

I know a few people who do Eco even though they could've made Comm, heck I'm mainly doing it for reason 3, and to compliment my politics major, and while the marks of people in group 1 would probably be lower, I have the general perception that marks for people in those other 4 groups are average+ , if my own marks are of any indication.

Wow, with a question like that you should be looking to transfer to surfing studies at the university of queensland by the end of the year. Good luck.

I enrolled into B Eco to major in Econometrics. Although I've decided against it at present, there are a few majors that can/cannot be pursued depending on your choice of undergraduate degree.

It doesn't seem like a big deal anyway. If I had chosen B Com over B Eco, I would have had "Business Statistics" instead of "Econometrics" as a major after completing the same required courses (which are identical for both majors).

and a business economics major rather then a pure economics.

If you're that concerned about it's perception then why are you doing it?

I don't consider it being a reject of commerce. It allows you to do honours in economics and gives you a different set of majors that you can't do in commerce. Economics is a much more specialised field so the demand for the course is not as great, whereas with commerce you can pretty much major in anything.

For me it would have made no real difference whether I did economics or commerce, as I would still be majoring in the same things (Financial economics / Finance) whether i was in commerce or in economics.

However, as I already have a commerce degree (in management) I had to go down the economics route. Not much difference really. You're still competing against commerce students in most of the courses.

If you're a non-asian troll then you've done a great job at nailing the asian accent.:D
