Hmm...only just started, and I've got a pretty clear-cut idea...but I'm gonna do a helluva lot of research on the medium and everything. My story could be set sorta near an orphanage, that I haven't decided, but I'm gonna go into call around and visit an orphanage in Sydney (if there are any) and stick some photos in my journal. I dunno...we'll see how it goes hey?

How's your goin funnyperson?

I didn't think orphanages exist anymore. Or at least, they weren't called that anymore

i'm sure they do - in ruins, perhaps :D lol

But I'm sure there are children's homes around, or even big foster homes?

Oh, no such thing hey? Rats...looks like it will be set in 1930's in a London orphanage...I can make it a musical...have a little boy as the main character...and he can be at the soup kitchen and be like "please sir, can i have some more?" OMG!!!! That's the best idea of the century! Showcase, HERE I COME!

Oooh...sorry...would you like a towel?

You could call the main character something like Olgrave or Oliver. :)

Nah, short story...but with this stunning new idea, I might just move into scriptwriting :p

I'm writing a play script for my Drama IP, so I can't do that for EE2...but I'll definitely be doing a short story.

You did a play script last year didn't you?

wow photo's in your journal... mine had none of that! it was page after page of writing and clippings and articles and stuff then bout 3 days before the due date i saw my friend's... it was like an art journal and it was all prettyful and stuff... so i decided mine would be too but got bored with decorating after about 5 pages so i handed it in looking half finished... and that was a really pointless story wasnt it... oh well your fault for reading it

yep, i did. Theres a few pointers and things in the mini-forum if you wanna have a look. you too robo3687. Although i would tread very very carefully with the nemo thing. you don't want to look like you are copying too much.

As far as research goes, its mainly about form or genre, however when you write creatively it's good to know about what you're writing about. For example, if you're writing a military story, it's good to research weapons, etc.

ok. I did a screenplay about my cultural roots for EE2 and as far as I know, it isn't something that hasn't been done heaps.

However, I do recommend you research whatever you are doing thoroughly. Eg. If you have certain experiences, don't just take them as gospel. Ask your friends for interviews and use those as research. Look for literary examples of work as well, such as Looking for Alibrandi, Bend it Like Beckam, Wild Swans, Joy Luck Club, My Big Fat Greek Wedding - to give your work some depth.

Also, be aware of how much angst is in your work. Although cultural differences may not be common, teenage angst IS. it is done all the time, heavily, and gets really tedious and boring for middle aged markers.

Also, i recommend that while short story may be the medium you are most comfortable with, you might want to explore a different medium if you think that cultural studies is overdone. For example, I did a screenplay which would have made my work stand out from the standard short story cultural differences thing.

good luck!! :)

if u want to find out about 'orphanages' look up Romanian orphanage because they still have them, Romania is known to have had them for a long time and controversy exists as to the behaviour of the people who work there and stuff... just a thought? maybe u could look up some real life stories about people who have lived in orphanage...
