In my point of view, English should remain a compulsory subject for HSC as English is a crucial subject where we can gain valuable knowledge that may prove useful for our future career.

However, I do not think that English must be counted towards our UAI. It just seems unfair for people whose academic strengths do not lie in this particular subject. There are people who see the current system being atrociously unfair (not just Asian people who tend to perform worse in this subject, I have seen countless White Australians getting stressed due to this subject).

After reading this, people would go "If English doesn't get counted, why even do it in the first place?". However, what I am proposing is that English doesn't need to be counted towards our UAI if we can satisfactorily complete the requirements set by the Board of Studies.

So, what's your view?

The purpose of English is to read, write and speak it, all the other analysing bullshit were taught is complete utter pointless.

I think that english as a course, how it is is the most pointless subject in the world. HOWEVER if it was things that we are actually going to use e.g. letters, resume's and maybe SOME creative writing would be good. I do not think english should be counted towards our UAI

Think of it this way - for those that see English as pointless and a waste of time if it didn't contribute towards the UAI which a high number of students want then it could be argued students might not put the effort in, like those who don't when their school makes it compulsory to do studies of religion.

And as I said in another thread:

On these matters I'm usually of the position that you can't change anything (at least not when it will most effect you) so instead of worrying about things you can't change you should focus on things you can i.e. assessments, exams and study.

Meh, is it just me, or is there already like a thousand threads about this topic?
Not on this topic, no. People were discussing whether English should be compulsory or not. This thread is different to that issue.

Agree with OP.

It's just unfair for someone who could be stomping everything but english to have their 99s brought way down just because of problems with expression, word choice etc. (which is what adv really comes down to).

Being compulsory but doesnt counting would encourage students to completely ignore English compared to those "counted subjects". I think the best method is still compulsory and also counted to UAI. Although im not a fan of english myself, but im a strong believer of this.

That's why I said that people should complete all the requirements of the English course. :)

I am not sure about the practicality but I reckon it will be better.

That post brought to you by a student using English to convey his message everybody.

Yes, English should. It's a standardisor. Everyone sits English. If it wasn't in the UAI, there wouldn't be a definitive comparion able to be made. Atleast here, you can see where everyone sits, and even make some assertions as to each students abilities.
It doesn't standardise anyone. There are people who are good at English and there are those who aren't. Not all 100-UAI-achievers topped the English. People who aren't good at English can still achieve high UAI whereas people who may be adept at English can achieve low UAI.

see i suck at english ( so badly that my half yearlies was the first english task i had passed since the SC) so i think it should only be counted if it is one of your best ten. If that was the situation i would do 13 units so it wouldnt effect my UAI luckly i dont need one so yay. But i think it should only be counted if it is onle of your best 10.

It'd be alot better if only one unit was compulsory, that would mean you could do adv eng and ext maths/hist and have the ext subject replace half the english mark.

This way you can still use english for comparing marks, but it isn't a large contributor, sort of like a compromise.
