WOW I have just been reading some of the uses of mathematics you guys have described ... and I never knew that math that seems irrelevant to everyday activity, has so many practical uses! I'm fascinated. I am a bit confused though! People seem to be arguing about whether or not certain equations are "formulas" ... but the title of the thread is "Equations you believe have had much influence"...

Anyway, sorry if it has already being mentioned, but an equation I believe has had much influence is (sorry for the simplicity here) y=x^2. We wouldn't have calculus without it and similar equations!

Although y=x^2 is (probably) just an algebraic expression which represents a graph like all expressions ... now that I think about it, there are no defined values... so it's not an equation! Ooops!
