there was NO conspiracy. Denmark & Sweden played attacking football and the result was a 2-2 draw. If Italy really deserved to go through, they wouldn't have had to rely on a favourable result from the Scandinavian encounter.. they would have already have done enough to qualify regardless. But they didnt. Because their team is full of underachievers and primadonnas (DP, Totti, Camoranesi, Vieri..). out of 270 minutes of play, only 60 of them were actually positive. That was against Sweden when Cassano put them 1-0 up and should have been more (if not for Vieri..). It was a result of mindless tactical and substitutional changes (i.e. Trap - soon to be replaced by Lippi) that allowed Sweden to equalize (a lucky equalizer, but a goal which would have come anyway via relentless Swedish pressure).

so, before you go and blame everyone else for Italy's shortcomings, take a look at your own teams performance.

Portugal dominated England in just about everything, except fouls. Their players showed more determination, they were constantly shutting down English attacks and launching counters, their play was cohesive and technically superior..

essentially, imo, it would have been embarrassing if Portugal lost to England.

sorry to cut the quote short... no sign of disrespect - but well justified. I completely agree. If Italy needed the outcome of another match to determine their own fate, well I just call that slack on their behalf. Needless to say, had Italy tried as hard as the other teams in their group, there was a slight chance that they could have pulled through to the next round. Unfortunate nevertheless, as Italy usually presents a good fighting side. Anyway, thats my two cents...
