Get a tutor.
(Let me clarify this, my experience of tutoring [i had 4 lessons] is that I was motivated to do better, and so it helped me insanely, by allowing me to refine my essay and comprehension skills.)

All of the Above ^^^

Edit: I'm not familiar with Standard english but maybe study over the techniques and the essay writing stuff, like how to write an essay, how & when to use quotes and what quotes are relevant for the text and questions etc...

Also like clintmyster said, dont really rely on your teachers too much...they're helpful but they might not be willing to help you enough to get you the marks you want.

Personally i'm getting the hang of english this year since i've been trying a lot harder, its making sense and i've been doing a lot of practice with essays.

Have a chat with your teacher. She might be able to suggest some things. Otherwise get a tutor. Don't try to rely on them however because that will get you nowhere.

I find reading in english really helps :) that and studying harder and smarter like namu said. Don't get caught up in the failing momentum and start pushing back up because as soon as ur caught in it its really hard to get out and then u'll really be screwed.

It should, practice practice practice!!!

Write essays, get them marked/checked and then improve your response on the same question or try a different question. My teacher says once you've done an essay dont improve on the same answer, you should get a new question and improve on that... idk if I should trust him or not...

Reading, writing, practising essays, gathering information on your texts, getting feedback, looking over marker's notes etc. Alternatively, get a tutor.

One thing that turned my rank around in English is I learnt to avoid writing in narrative structure. When writing essays assert that you are aware of the fact that you are being manipulated by the author emotionally when reading the text.

For example "Huxley used...to assert a certain atmosphere...Evidently, Huxley tried to characterise....Through this Huxley successfully.....etc.etc." Try to refer to the composer's name and him doing stuff, this essay structure will make you look smarter.
