It really does depends on what you're trying to get out of your training, however in my situation I'm eating slightly below maintenance until I can shed enough fat. Once I've done that, I'm probably going to stick to eating at maintenance. It's not so much that I dispute the fact that you need to eat above maintenance, but more that I see it as an unnecessary step, especially for people who aren't professional bodybuilders. If you do have enough body fat to use for energy and your goal is to shed fat and gain some muscle, then you're most likely doing yourself a huge disservice by jumping straight on a cut when you could actually be gaining (more) muscle at the same time.
