My new rig
So I'm looking at getting these parts

CPU: core i7 2600k @ 3.4GHz /8MB cache - $340
Mobo: Gigabyte: GA-Z68XP - UD3 - $159
RAM: Kingston 4GB x 2 @ 1600MHz - $65
GPU: Gigabyte GF Nvidia GTX 570 1280MB - $400
HDD: 1 TB WD black edition SATA 3 - $165
PSU: 750w Cosair Modular TX series - $180
DVD drive: 22xSamsung Dual-Layer DVDRW - $30
Case: Cooler master HAF RC-912 - $120
Fans: 120mm case fans x 3 (1 by default) - $15 each (receiving 2 for free)

Total: $1 459 (without monitor)

Good deal yeah...

Should I get a 24" LED monitor for ~$180? is that too big? also are gaming mouses worth it? for ~$70

I'd go at least 6 if not 8 gig ram but that's just me. Rest looks good.

Maybe spinpoint f3 hard drive too.

I would get G.Skill ripjaws or something better with a heatsink

I did some searching around for the HDD, seems like WD black 1TB is around $200 now, I guess it's because the WD factory got screwed a couple of months ago due to floods or something, hence less supply = higher price, just seems like bad luck. But I did get mine for about $120.

Get an SSD, and then also get a large yet cheap drive it'll cost you an extra 100-200 but it'll be so worth it. (120gb+ recommended)

lololol.oollolool ram heatsinks are a marketing gimmick

since you're getting sandy bridge your first priority should be making sure the ram operates at 1.5V instead of 1.6, 1.65 etc.

almost everything is installed via disc still and even if that changes old stuff will still have to be installed via discs

unless you can be bothered to create and chuck all the isos on a large hard drive which is time consuming as fuck, a dvd drive makes sense

Just get the Ripjaws, and get some other HDD, the Black isn't worth it

get a samsung spinpoint f3

faster and quieter than wd black
pretty hard to find a F3 (in stock) these days, also it's arguable whether it's faster or not, only in seek times by a bit, I love my black.

you need one, it's an essential still until there's DVDs around you need one

edit: what phoenix said

Ahh yeah I heard of those floods destroying the factories...dam :( and apparently it comes with 5 years warranty (the HDD).

I was initially looking at a 120 GB SSD but it's so small for $200. and apparently 256 GB SSD was $600 so yeah no.
