Say for example everybody performed low in a certain hsc subject examination due to a hard exam.

Like, the highest scores in the whole state were band 5. Will the highest person in the state (say who got 89), still be rewarded in relation to rank? Will it affect the atar just because its low?

If the raw marks were that low, then they will be aligned accordingly to account for the difficulty of the exam.

This is what happens in extension maths(for e.g.). Just because someone gets a final mark of 90, does not mean they got 90% of the exam paper correct.

oh really? but sometimes in some subjects no one gets a band 6 even AFTER they align etc.

So what if the highest WAS a hsc mark of 89? will they still be put down- atar wise?

But usually if that was the case, the consensus is that the exam wasn't hard, rather the calibre of the students was quite incapable to say the least.

I need more context to answer that question of yours.

Just relax, you should not be concerning yourself with things that are completely out of your control.

oh ok thanks. my legal studies teacher is scaring us though cause he said that during 2001, the syllabus changed for legal studies making it hard for people to get band 6 (only 1% did that year)

now in 2011 it has changed again...so im so scared. i really want a 90+

It doesnt seem harder. i dont know, i think my teacher is just scaring us. His reason was: "you won't have much past papers to study because they wouldn't be part of the new syllabus"

Yeah your teacher is scaring you, probably with the intention of working you harder.

PE had changed syllabi, it didn't make too much of a difference, just know your syllabus and you'll be fine.

you've got other subjects as back up, but you should hope BOS(the other one, obviously) won't screw you up , like they normally do :[

Although only 1% of people got a band 6, this does not neccessarily equivilate to a low atar. The BOS takes this into account scales your marks accordingly. Atar is a rank in comparison to the rest of the people doing the Hsc so therefore even if you may have got say 89 in 2001, then this would have equalled to a high percentile.
