Re: Hsc 2009 bio exam

For question one i put c? I thought mutations produce new alleles as there is a change in the base pairs of dna?
This is what I did too.
Don't know now...

Re: Hsc 2009 bio exam

Wait .. WHAT?? You had to conclude what type of inheritance it is? omg I thought it just said construct a pedigree of the family???

How many marks is it?? :S

it was viable since all the males had it then the trait is on the 'Y' chromosome therefore = sex linked

Re: Hsc 2009 bio exam

Lol what's the point of vaccinating the diseased.. no point injecting in weak/dead pathogens when they have virulent strains already in them lol.
I put A

geeze for q 4 i had A then changed it to B. The question said the disease had been identified in one enclosure on a farm. and i didn't get why u would vaccinate all healthy animals and leave the sick ones. i dont know which is correct think its b though :)

Yeah man, the question relating to that pedigree where you have to evaluate the students conclusion? I didn't reach a conclusion, the results were not valid! You didnt have to say it was a specific type of inheritance..you'd be wrong if you did.

Re: Bio Exam ?

nah theres already another thread somewhere on here bout the exam, and a lot of people were sayin it was easy. yeaah that kidney question, i think i screwed that up too! i labelled it and drew it right and everything, but then i couldnt remember what the medula, cortex and pelvis actually do, so i just said that the medulla and cortex had nephrons in there where filtration and reabsorption occur, and the pelvis leads the collecting ducts to the ureter, or something like that :S
yeah i said the cortex has the glomeruli (for filtration)

medulla (loop of henle and tubules for reabsorbtion)

pelvis (water duct, secretion).

My MC went: A, B, B, A, C, C, A, B, C, A, D, C, B, D and D.

Re: Hsc 2009 bio exam

These are my answers for MC: A A B A C C A B C A D C B D D
im prety sure it's CBBAACABCADCBDD
coz crossing over doenst make new alleles jus causes different alleles on different chromosomes.
and its pasteur coz it says the causes not tha reponses
??

Re: Hsc 2009 bio exam

Kidney:

- Cortex = filtration
- Medulla = reabsorption
- Ureter = secretion
I'm not sure whether this is correct
i dont mean to undermine you but the processes of filtration, reabsorption and secretion occur in the nephron not in specific parts of the kidney. the nephrons are located mainly in the cortex and outer medulla and there are almost 800000-1 million nephrons in each kidney.

i put the cortex and described role of nephron, and put ureter and described excretion of urea in urine and put in the renal artery bringing in contaminated blood from the body for excretion
fingers crossed its right
gl to everyone:):)

Exactly. There was no information regarding female carriers, so his conclusion was not valid.

Re: Hsc 2009 bio exam

How'd everyone go?? I think it was a pretty straight forward exam.. besides some multiple choice questions that were tricky :/ My options on genetics had big questions... 5 marks, 6 marks, and 7 marks consecutively :O!

Question 14 about the punctuated equilibrium/convergent/divergent evolution.. what'd you guys put? My teacher said it could be divergent.. or punctuated. I put punctuated.

Also the question with the stomates opening.. it could be either b) or d).. if it was a eucalyptus tree it would be b) but i put d)
It was definately B, why would stomates open at night when there is no light to photosynthesise with? They open early morning, close midday and open at dawn to minimise the water loss during the hottest part of the day.
