"masturbate" is such an ugly word...

The consensus that I -as a guy- detect is that girls generally either straight out claim they don't masturbate, or, are somewhat ashamed of their bedroom habits, but don't deny them publically (or, to close friends, or boyfriend, whatever..).

I'm not posting to find out whether girls do or don't -- not only has it probably been done before but I don't think it'd get anywheer... I'm interested in why the sense of 'shame' or 'guilt' seems to flood over this topic. No doubt it's both a societal and personal thing, but what're your opinions on the way girls feel about this?

well girls (and guys for that matter) are statisitcally more likely to loose their virginity, experiment and start to develop individually away from their family if they come from homes which have broken down, do not function with ease, come from poor financial regions etc...im sure you have read something like this before

i read it ages ago to remember exactly the significant points

but im sure masturbation would be relevant to this idea, that if a teenager comes from a good home with less pressures and does not have any social stigmas forced upon her then she will form her own opinion on the matter

im sure alot of it in the end is insecurity and not really having the desire as much as another person to please themselves

like jago said there's the social stigma that still surrounds girls that if you enjoy sex (or masturbation, i guess), you're a slut. as untrue as that may be, it still exists.

i don't really talk about it with anyone except my boyfriend, but i wouldn't say i'm ashamed. it's more that it's a personal thing and in the same way that i don't describe the details of sex with my friends or family, i don't really talk about masturbation either.

I think it stems from the archaic ideas of sex that were around in the '50s and so forth...men go out and plant their seed, whilst the woman must remain pure and innocent and not derive pleasure from sexual activities.

i think that some girls see masturbation as a bad thing it i think is like to them their personal virginity or something like that... at my school girl are so uptight about it it is really sad. its not as though someone is asking your sex life although that is a totally different subject so i think (coming from a girl) that girls need to get over it if you do it then be happy to say that you do if not then stay away from those type of conversations.

i do however agree that masturbation is an ugly word

i think if a girl says she has never masturbated... ever

chances are she's fibbing. i mean all these ppl talkin about it all the time, the big 18 or so years of your life youve lived... chances are its happened - even if its helping a b/f out or i dunno.

but what girls probably mean when they say they dont "pleasure themselves" is theyre not as obsessed with it as boys seem to be.

Hmm. I think there's a difference between wanting girls to know that masturbation (yes, ugly word) is acceptable, and wanting to know about girls masturbating, yes?

The former is quite idealistic, the later quite selfish.

It's not a big deal at all.
