Hello there!

I will be in Year 10 as of 2012... I am currently enrolled in Tipps @ Yagoona, Maths there is excellent - my Tutor Ricky is enthusiastic and always helping... Though, english is okay, but not great and i wished it would be better.. Sadly there are no Science Classes, and Tuition Fee is Expensive.. about $300/month.
----------------

To set things straight: I do not attend a Selective School, I would like to find a tutor that is excellent in Teaching, hence also cater for my Science Needs.

Also, i must point out that it will be my first time attending a Science Tutor... And by Year 10.. i think many tutors would have dashed past many months ahead of the Curriculum, of which i havent learnt..
I will be the most Clueless in the class LOL!:speechless:
My Parents are looking for me to take an entrance exam at Truongs... But All i've heard from others is that: only the "elite" attend, Classes are overpopulated, and waiting lists are long.

Any Suggestions will be great thanks... please keep in mind (Good Reputation, Affordably Priced and Testimonies from Past Students' HSC Results)

Michael.

Happy New Year~!

I've heard good things about Peak Science located in Canley heights. I think it's $20 or $25/lesson.

Maths at TIPPS is excellent, the pace is not too slow and not too fast so it's a good pace (probably 3 - 5 months ahead of school usually) in my opinion. The teachers at TIPPS are all good so yeah...
The homework load is usually quite little/manageable and the environment is friendly and not strict at all! I've been at TIPPS since Year 7 for Maths and I'd say it's a really good maths tutor/coaching college.
Ricky is enthusiastic indeed and did you know he was previously an Actuary? (4U maths material right there)
I was in Ricky's class for 1 year [10A# :)] and now, I'm in 11A and I have Kobskii who's also really funny and is an excellent tutor!
TIPPS receives great results every year in the HSC for 2U/3U/4U maths!

For English, I heard Ngo and Sons (Truongs) has Mrs. Diab who is apparently really good for English!
For Science, PEAK is probably the most well-known and hyped science tutor in the livo, cabra, fairfield regions!

While we're at it, does anyone know any good coaching colleges or tutors around the Bankstown regions for Physics and English? (Reasonable prices as well)

Hey RivalryofTroll!
Thanks for your reply, yeah Ricky is truly something!
I currently have Vi for english at Tipps.. Though i want to get Larry/bruce or Kris, I heard their really good and detailed in explaining.
Im in 10A atm :) something im proud of LOL.. Used to be in 7C with judy... Then left and came back in year 9 in 9B with Jane.
Im a type of person who will laugh At the slightest funny thing... Im scared being in Kobskii's cos of his accent which might provoke me to laugh @_@ Loll

I dont want to go to truongs, my mum just told me that she heard if someone talked in his class: he would send them out his class :/
And some say Mrs Diabo doesnt give much depth, not much hw and she lets people socialise.

I will consider PEAK science :) thanks for suggestion

Yeah Truong is heaps strict.
This.

@OP: Yep, while TIPPS is quite the opposite (friendly and carefree environment as opposed to Truongs) which is why I like TIPPS (plus I live closer to TIPPS as well :)) since I live in the Bankstown regions.

Bruce is probably the best English teacher at TIPPS, so yeah, from what I've heard from others.
Can you help me pass a message along to Ricky? (PM me and I'll give you the message) :)
Also, you guys should ask him to give you guys the 4U Maths Lecture and trying out for a Selective School or Higher Ranked School Lecture :)
He'll rant like crazy (okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but still)!
Remember to let him photocopy all of your maths exams at school because he loves those papers and other past papers!

What do you recommend for preparation of Selective Tests btw? :)

I really want to make it into a selective school in 2013.. before its too late..

I've tried in Year 6 (Biggest Fail ever) - I never took it seriously
Year 8 - I thought i had it, but wasn't successful.

In my Perspective, i noticed that, Asians particularly - Maths is Stressed too much in our lives and I might do good in the Maths part but when it comes for English, its probably the reason I don't get in.

My Naplan Writing results were crap... Band 7 [Below School + State Avg.

Language Conventions Band 10 [Above School + State Avg

Reading Band 8 [Above School + State Avg

and something else was Band 8 [Above School + State Avg

If Anyone has Helpful Material, please feel free to upload them! :)

Hey Michael,
I'll give you this link that will help you below:
http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?t=272364 - It's a guide written by me for helping students that want to try out for Selective schools! I think it'll be great use to you! Share it around with your friends!
Another thread that I want to show you is:
http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?t=273431 - It's basically a discussion on what to expect from other students wanting to try out! Also, I recommend that you read all of the pages in the link as I am 100% sure that it will help you!

Last year, I got offers from Sydney Technical and Hurlstone Agricultural but I chose Sydney Technical High School in the end. Nevertheless, I got an offer from Hurlstone so I can give you any advice you need from my experience! I'll gladly help you for your quest to making it into Hurlstone!

If you're worried about NAPLAN and want to compare with others.
Here were my results for your reference:
Year 9 NAPLAN 2010
Reading - Middle Band 9
Writing - Band 10 (Highest point on the scale)
Spelling - Band 10 (Highest point on the scale)
Grammar & Punctuation - Middle Band 10
Numeracy - Band 10 (Highest point on the scale)

And yes, all of mine were above school and above state average.

My biggest advice for Hurlstone is:
They don't care about your reports that much, they only care about the entrance test mainly so smash that entrance exam!
But, to be on the safe side, try to get all As except maybe, 1 or 2 Bs in your Year 10 Half Yearly Report!
Your Year 10 Half Yearly Report + The Entrance Exams = The Key to Success into making it into any Fully Selective Schools!
If you want to know what my report was like or if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me! (I can give you my e-mail and I'll be able to answer any of your questions on a frequent basis)

I will also add your Email, note that i won't have much to ask, since im still settling into bored of studies community!

Hey mate, RivalryofTroll knows his stuff and I'd like to shed some light too on this. I'm thinking of starting up a thread in which I will answer any questions you have about selective school entry after Yr 6 (as I too got into a selective school after yr 6). RivalryofTroll, do you wanta start up this thread in conjuction with me? Like we'll both share our knowledge regarding this issue (which often garners some fierce competition) :)

And BTW, ask me ANY questions you want on this particular thread ONLY or in PRIVATE MESSAGE! :) I have a wide knowledge regarding the testing format of OTHER selective schools NOT in the South-Western Sydney/Bankstown/Illawarra region as well as any other information regarding their selection process. I'll be happy to help!

LOL I just have to say, Truongs is not that strict by the way. I mean, it is strict, but compared to what others say, it's not. You can socialise, although you won't really have time for it. Take the entrance exam for fun! I failed it my first time. Anyway, what I've seen is that he loves Hurlstoners. He loves selective students and has a slight preference over them then others, but still, you've got a chance. There's another place (connected to Truongs) called DA College which is just another street away, and if there isn't any space at Truong, they shove you there. I went there, and its not different at all. It may be slower (in terms of work because they're newer classes) but in pace, it's all the same! And for your exit exam, you get shifted to the official Truong place. And note, don't worry about your exit exam I think the cut off for my grade was like 10%, which is probably one question worth 4 or 5 marks. I didn't study and I was fine. Then you get shifted with your classmates so you can study together, and yeah.

For PEAK Science, its $25 for an hour and a half. Teacher: Mr Le and he's a lawyer. I really liked the notes he provides. Basically, you go in class, he checks you've done the homework, then you spend the rest of the lesson writing notes, with him occasionally explaining some concepts. You can socalise all your want. You also have to rewrite the theory in class once for every week, and two for some weaker students who fail in exams. There's a test after each topic and if you get below 50% 3 times, he calls your parents, kicks you out, that kind of thing. But don't worry if you're new, it doesn't count. So he posts all the test results for the whole class to see, except the people who got really bad like 10%. And in September-ish, you move into a different centre (across the street) and you break into what sciences you want. The teachers are ex-students, but nevertheless ATARS of 99+. Just note, the year 10 notes are a tiny mix of year 11, so it may not be the same as the actually BOS syllabus. I think he's just giving students the taste of senior sciences before deciding which ones you want to do, something like that.

There's also this really good place called Focus College at Cabramatta, but I only quit because it was more expensive and I'd rather do accelerated at PEAK maths. PEAK maths is pretty good. Good notes and all.

Also don't go James An at Liverpool. Just don't.

(Just kidding around)

Hey, do you (J.T.) happen to have the syllabus dot point notes for the preliminary physics topic The World Communicates? Send it to me! (I need it to create my own notes and you probably have top quality notes)

I've signed up for Peak Science, starting this Thursday :)... Your description is making me nervous -.-, would you think that the content studied there is a few months ahead of School?
I don't even know 4/5 of the Period Table!!! I saw my friend bring in his Peak Science H/W, the stuff on the sheet seemed hard.

Btw, I'm interested in Accelerated Maths at Peak; how much are the rates?

Apparently "DA College" was a copy of "DA Tuition" in Bonnyrigg, I heard that they are Suing Truongs LOL.

O_O (surely they must have a testing system)

Ill ask away when i have anything on my mind! Thanks.

I feel so stupid after reading this thread lol, I wish i went to tutor. My parents always nag about English, and why I don't get As instead of Cs. I try my best but i'm usually not interested in any of the work, well at least I try to be enthusiastic about it and all that. Just so you know Michael I got way lower than yours. I can never really be proud of myself because of the marks I gain. I'm a bit average in marks usually getting 70-80% and yeah, but at least I at least got 90 and above and came second for one subject (IT) but hope to aim for a much higher mark and ranking in subjects maybe the top 20 :D

Any of you guys want to help me gain better marks or just give advice?
