:) Hey, I'm interested in doing paediatrics too.

Does anybody know what course you should take if you want to be a paediatrition? I have no idea whether I want to be a nurse that specialises in paediatrics or a padiatritition. (do you just take the nursing course???)
Thanks:wave:
Yay some1 else interested in paediatrics :)

Yea a paediatrician is a doctor [physician] specialising. I wanted to do this when i was younger but have come to the realisation of how many years it would take. Nursing has become my aim now and im excited:) i really hope to work with kids one day...

Do u know if any1 would be placed at hosps such as RPA or Prince of Wales??

i'm at RPA at the moment, and people go there for placements from 1st to 3rd year. i'm pretty sure Prince of Wales is used as well, but don't quote me.

and if you mean specifically for paeds, i worked with a newgrad who did his submajor at RPA but they have a very tiny kids ward (eg. 10 beds). otherwise i can remember you could put down preferences for Westmead & Royal Women's.

nope! not true!

if they went through everyone's academic record to make sure only the 'best' were to get a place, it would take too long. everyone who puts paeds as their first preference is put into a hat and randomly drawn out - and for my year everyone who wanted to do it got a place, no-one missed out.
the only thing that was full, so some people got their 2nd preference, was the elective for women's & children's health.

and if you want to do mental health or aged care you are GUARANTEED a place! no questions! :) (i chose mental health, i'm really looking forward to it!)

Hey guys...
im @ USYD at the moment, doing a B health science, and im thinking of transferring next year to do nursing @ uts city campus...i think it would be a much more fulfilling courese and more directed to where i see myself in the future..anyway end of that rant...my point is..who can tell me anything about the selection criteria to transfer...and if its hard..

and one more thing....in terms of specialising...can you choose to specialise in midwifery or neonatal? i really want to do something with infants...

hey, what was the STAT and personal statment people where talking about? I'm doing my ENs atm, and am seriously considering not doing my RN's first and just going straight into Midwifery. I know it's what I want to do, but I also know my UAI (from 2003) isn't high enough. Does anyone know how mature age entry works? I'll be 21-22 when applying.. Thanks!

Hi I was just.. wondering.. lol... wat its like to be a nurse? Is it a dirty job? the reason Im asking this is im getting mixed messeges from ppl. Im confused about wat i wanna do career wise and am still weighing up my options. How did u know nursing was the path for you?

lol im not a nurse...but i can tell you its a dirty job...watching people throw up,empyting all sorts of drains, and emergency and theatre is the best (or so i hear but then again it varies from person to person what aspect of nursing they work in...)
especialy when an artery bursts in your face:p

you have to have a passion for blood and guts :D

awesome stuff i tell you....but i dont think thats why people do it, you have to weigh up the +/-....i think what you get in return in my opinion is very rewarding...hence the reason i want to transfer to it next year

maybe ill end my rant and let an acctual nurse comment lol....

one more thing....does anyone know the approximate annual salary range...do nurses and midwives earn the same amount?

cheers :D

yes, it can get dirty, especially depending on the ward/specialty you're working in. If you can't stand the sight of blood, I dont know who well you'll go. After all, blood is nothing compared to what you'll normally get. Urine, faeces, IDCs, Colostomy bags, sputum, vomit. It's not why we get into it, and we don't enjoy it, but it's part of the job - Pretty much take the bad with the good. I absolutley love my career and couldn't imagine being in a field other than nursing. Emergencey is pretty interesting, but I can't wait to get into Midwifery, especially Maternal Mental Health.

Midwives and RNs get the same pay under the NSW state award. Might rise though, I'm pretty sure it's going to, the award I have is July 2005. 1st Year RN/Midwife - $811.40/week.

You'd think Midwives would get more though, seeing as how the specialise and do extra study than RNs. Either way, I think the NSW Nurses Ass. as a copy of the award, but I cant find it atm.

thats pretty good pay...i mean thats only starting off wage! id like to transfer to nursing and then specialise in midwifery...probably do nursing practitioner accreditation...

if you do nursing first off....how long does it take to specialise in midwifery, do u have to do the full 3 year course? id like to go sraight into midwifery but i may like to do another form of nursing further along down the road....and so its good to be trained in all areas....

another question : do doctors treat you like shit, or is that just a sterotype...

The STAT is the Special Tertiary Admissions Test, and basically if you don't have certain qualifications you can take the STAT instead to show your capabilities. Its basically divided into a multiple choice section and a short essay section and there are 2 sessions a year.

And here is some stuff on the Personal Statement.

You can do your 3 year B. Nursing course and then start the Grad.Dip Midwifery, which is 12 months - you get paid for it and are employed by a hospital while doing it. Pretty sure you spend most of your time in the hospital. The 3 year course is completeley separate, and you don't need your RNs to do it. I'd imagine if you wanted to do the degree and then do your RNs later on, you'd get a fair bit of credit for it.

As for the Docs, some are great some are bastards. Just like any field. Although, yes, a few surgeons think they're god.

Thanks for the info and links Kami!

i hate being undermined by authority...HATE IT!!! and i know there is plenty of that in the workplace, i mean if you're a teacher you have principals and heads of departements...and if you're a secretary you can have heads of crap and lawyers down your throat....but within a hospital it just seems to be emphasised so much more...well it appears sterotyped to a greater extent anyway!

i dunno....i guess it feels good to have authority...if i was a hot-shot surgeon i would probably think highly of myself as well....

if you had the chance to be a doctor instead of a nurse would you do it...if someone came to you today and said...right i will give you a place in med school as of tomorrow....

Yea i totally despise of authority who do not use their power and knowledge for good!!! Happens in all work places and its always the little guys who get blamed.

But i'm excited to start studying nursing at UTS hopefully next year, hopefully i get to work with children some time down the track, neonatal would be cool too

I'd consider it, and a few years ago would have jumped at it. I don't know now, maybe years and years down the track, but not now. I'm very happy nursing atm.
