1.Let S ans S' be foci of the general ellipse x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 =1 and P( x1, y1 ) be arbitrarypoint on it in the fourth quadrant.

Here's a diagram from the question

Untitled.jpg

Show tan (phi) = -b/aey1.

Is this question right? I keep getting b^2/aey1.

Can someone tell me if my answer is wrong.
Thanks

You are correct. This result is derived when proving the reflection property of an ellipse. But they already gave you that the angles were equal.

Also, you drew theta on your diagram but had phi in the question. :p

It looks like phi is the top angle, and theta is the bottom.

But we usually use the lower case form not upper case. So there should be a gap.

lol sorry for the misleading diagram. the bottom angle is theta and the top one is phi. And the questions asks to show that tan (phi) = w/e then prove that the angles are equal. It isnt given in the question.

Thanks for the help guys:)
