Actually, I stayed up to teach somebody implicit differentiation.

Effectively differentiating multiple variables at once with respect to one.

Eg y<sup>2</sup>=x<sup>3</sup>
2y(dy/dx)=3x<sup>2</sup>
dy/dx=3x<sup>2</sup>/2y

Now y=x<sup>3/2</sup>
&there4; dy/dx= 3/2x<sup>1/2</sup>

Which is the same as doing it normally. But it can be quicker this way (consider the derivative of x<sup>2</sup>+x-1=3y<sup>2</sup>-4y+3). All differentiation in the HSC maths course can be considered implicit where the highest power of another variable is 1.

oh god. i do 2u maths and have no idea what that means. am i in trouble?? ok ok sorry cherryblossom, will move this convo to the maths thread

No it is only taught with limited applications in 3U and more broadly in 4U.
