our exam is only 1 hr long!!! what the heck am i menat to write during that time?!?!

If it's only one question, then it's one hour for one essay. An hour per essay is actually a lot longer than you get in most exams (by comparison, English is 40 minutes per essay) so you should have enough time to write a substantial answer.
Does your school keep past papers? Looking at old midcourse exams will gie you a fair idea of the sort of questions asked.
Is your mid course assessable or not?

Our half yearly is an hour and a bit, and non assessable. The teacher actually gave us a copy of the question today- the test is in three weeks.

Well, ours is 'with reference to the source and other sources, analyse how the writing of history has chaged over time'.

Did everyone get a glossary of the words they use in the question? (Analyse, evaluate, etc). Our teacher warned us that the verb is very important.

i found out that mine is non-assessable. but the teacher said that if we do not meet the standard, we have to drop it. so that means i might be those who will be dropping though i don't want to.

i'll question is, what is history? how many historians is the opitmumm amount for this question?

You should aim for a couple of historians from each of the four main schools of historical thought:

- Classical (Herodotus, Thucydides, Tacitus)
- Empiricist / Scientific (von Ranke, Elton, Evans, Windschuttle)
- Relativist (Carr, Vincent)
- Postmodernist (Jenkins, Derrida, White)

BTW, almost every question about "What is History?" comes back to the same essential elements: the differing opinions of the above schools on the topic of whether history should (and can) be entirely factual and based on evidence, or influenced by the perspective of the historian. You'll notice this applies to questions about "aims and purposes of history", "the influence of perspective on history", "changing approaches to the construction of history" and almost everything else you can get asked.

If in doubt, check the syllabus to see what the main focuses are. The 'five key questions' on pp. 12-13 are the central element of the course.

bede for middle ages and gibbon for enlightenment(just before the empiricists) are also good for accentuating differences between classical and empiricist. gibbon esp can apply well to most essay q's

OUr school has two hours for the half yearly, we've got two questions, one is purely a practice, the other is the only one that has real impact on our assessment mark, that being the one on the "What Is History" topic, rather than our case study on Elizabeth, which is the question which possesses little relevance.

Had my half yearly on Tuesday, our question was:

"With reference to this article and at least THREE examples from historians you have studied, discuss how history is constructed for different audiences and from different points of view"

I did my half yearly today.

The first question was based on a reading, and said "With reference to the reading, and also discussing THREE other historians, discuss the importance of the historian" or something like that.

The second question was "Each generation rewrites history under it's own terms. Discuss the accuracy of this statement in reference to two issues from your case study."

I think I did good in the first one, and bad in the second.

yeah, i did mine also today, we got an unseen source and it said something like with reference to the source and three example of historians discuss how the historians construct history for their particular audience and their point of view or something like that. heaps random but easy.

My school has no history extension mid courses, we've only got the trial HSC and our research project, what percentage is your mid-course and trial worth then? our trial's only like 10 out of the 50%

I had mine today and the question what "With reference to this article (The Historians Conscience by Stuart Macintyre), and THREE examples from historians you have studied, discuss how history is constructed for different audiences and from different points of view." Each and every question is going to relate to how history has changed over time, so I think be prepared for anything, and as long as you can find the issues in the source, if you are given one, then you will be fine!
