how many words should I be aiming for 45 minutes??? (1 Viewer)

I have to do an in class business report.
Mine is currently 1300 words. Is that too much for 45 minutes?

800-1000 is what i'm told by my teachers for 40-45 minutes. 1300 is possible if you already know the question and such, but it'd be really difficult to pull off that many words without knowing the question beforehand

That's quite under what would be/should be expected... not for 50 minutes at least. In the HSC the minimum expected is 800 words for 40 minutes. In the HSC, I typically wrote 1600-1800 words for my business reports in 50-60 minutes, and for economics I was able to write over 2000 words in about an hour. Depending on your writing speed, 1300 may or may not be too much. For me, in 45 minutes, I typically wrote 1500-1550 words, but I think I was a machine back then... LOL. Well at least that's what people always suggested... I could never write anywhere near that now that the HSC is over!!! I struggle to write 1200 in 40 minutes now!

Try some hand strengthening exercises though, you'll be surprised.

I think 1300 might be pushing it. It all depends on how quickly you can write. If you know you can write relatively quick, I wouldn't go any more than 1200 for 45min. If your slower, I'd aim for 800-1000 words. Its better to take a little more time to make your writing actually legible so I guess go for 1000. If you have to cut your response down, at least it means your probably being more concise.

What I usually do is write my essay and memorise it. Make sure it answers the question and have it around 800-1000 words depending on how much you can write. When you have almost reached your conclusion, look at how much time you have left. Keep some extra points in mind in case you have time to go into more depth, so you can add it in if necessary. If there is no time then dont worry about it. Just keep how much time you have left in mind, in case you need to cut your report down even further. Hope this helped!

For 40 minutes, I comfortably wrote about 900 - 1000 words, or perhaps a tad more. So in 50 minutes I'd expect to do about 1250 - 1400 (pushing it for the upper limit).

Give yourself a strict 45 minute time limit, and see if you can actually write 1300 words in that time. If not, then you definitely know you need to cut down. 1000-1100 should be a reasonable aim.

That may be effective for English, but it's not wise to do it for humanities subjects... you need to have the ability to write essays on the spot for these subjects, using the knowledge you have attained through your study. there are far too many options in terms of the number of questions that could potentially be asked in an essay question for a humanities subject such as business studies or economics, so you are basically wasting your time memorising an essay which has a very small chance of coming up. unless you have been given the question before hand, I would recommend that you focus on learning the CONTENT rather than learning an essay. but even if you have been given the question before-hand, remember that this is not the sort of experience you will have in the actual HSC exams and in the trials and in other potential school assessments... so you're best getting into the habit of making essays and formulating responses that suit the question right then and there rather than going into the exam with pre-conceived ideas as to what the question is going to be.

For a prepared question, you should be able to write at least 1400 words in 45 minutes. For unprepared, at least 1000 words. That's pretty much the standard if you want to guarantee yourself at least a band 5 since if you write enough, you're pretty much keeping yourself above a certain mark (say, about 15/20)
