corroboration is also important i.e how the historian could gain a further perspective by looking at other sources.
or how the source could be improved.
eg. a source with a mainly British perspective could be imporved by having a German, French etc perspective.

The 'W' Words:

What is the source?
Who wrote/took/composed it?
For Whom did they write it for?
When did they write it?
Where did they write it?
Why did they write it?

And yeah, corroborative evidence is very important.

Type (e.g visual or memoir and Primary/Secondary)
Author
Context (WWI, WWII etc)
Audience (Who was it intended for)
Motive (Why was it produced?)
Perspective (From a Civilian, an Officer, German, English)
Content (What is in the actual source)
Usefulness (Is a Home fronts source useful for studying trench warfare?)
Reliability (How trustworthy, does it lack clarity or information?? etc.. )

ok so for analysing sources does anyone have any essay structures for the two essays in section one??
my teacher said to do like:

blank statement
source one- usefulness and reliability
source two- usefulness and reliability
cinclusion

for the second essay that is.

also how do u write a source evaluation for two sources. Do you judge the sources together as a unit. eg source 1 and two are very useful for a historian..... when you write your blank statement?
how would you make a blank statement about them if one is really useful and the other one isn't at all?

For my structure it is just

Paragraph 1: Source one- usefulness and reliability
Paragraph 2: Source two- usefulness and reliability

That's it if they don't ask me to compare the usefulness and i'm out of time. If they do ask me or i have extra time I'd use the structure above minus the blank statement. In the conclusion I'd compare/contrast the sources.

7 points to look at : origin, motive, content, audience, perspective and how these determine reliability and usefulness.
Equally, when analysing sources, a good idea for creating flow is to look at how the audience influences motive and thus shapes the content.

You're right on the mark!:)

Thanks for the advice mate.
Sucks to be me....my school's best history teacher left to become head teacher at Sydney North Girls and I am stuck with a teacher who hasn't taught snr history for over 10 yrs =S
so yeah we pretty much read the textbook and do questions 24/7 . no class discussions. no tips. N O T H I N G .
if i dont fail modern I'll be a happy chap.

Our teacher says reliability first because we get asked 'how useful would Source A be' as the question itself and told to consider perspective and reliability in our answers to that question. We say it's reliable because ___ and therefore it is useful.

Ok so I have to do a Source analysis , explaining the usefulness of each source to an historian studying the impact of the war on women's lives and experiences in Britain, making reference to the perspective and reliability of each. If for one particular source, it has no date, no author and no origin, but through research I made an educated guess at who the author is, I found out more information about him that would lead to changing the intended audience and therefore the reliability, how do I write my answer this question? :/ Thank you in advance!
