hey,

i got my group certificate today. should be getting back around $250.
can i claim an extra $91 for my union fees? or can i only do that if I earned more than $6000?
Also, I know this is a stupid question, but what exactly do I do with my group certificate? Hand to an accountant?

to do your tax yourself you can download e-tax2004 form the www.ato.gov.au website.

its set out in a wizard form so it isnt that hard to do, you juts need al your info including shares bought/sold, travel, super, and blah so it takes some time.

I earn a bit, and keeping every reciept and a good accountant... it combines to equal a very tidy return.

Do you mind giving me the contact details of your accountant?

Well it ain't HR Block.

She works for HKS up in Cairns.... so it's not for everybody.

But I had a lot of deductions.

The financial year runs from 1 july to 30 june, that's the period you get tax back from.

I ended up with $378 :)

natstar: are you sure about the textbooks thing? cos i heard that you can't claim anything school/uni-related at all..?

and macccca, i don't think your question was answered, but you are allowed to claim up to $300 of claims without receipt, anything over $300 needs a receipt.

mine was about $1400... but i work full time, and i claimed the 5000km driving thing too... pretty much all of it i payed i got back
next year is going to be good - they just changed my tax rate to one where they take more tax out but you get it back (its like they're saving for you) - which will be helpful at uni!
