So if i was to get a diagram and use it as appendix 1, how would I reference this? Just in the bibliography or is there a way of referencing it somewhere in the text?

You usually reference diagrams in the text the same way as you do with quotes, so for example <diagram here> (Author, 2003), and then in the reference list you would put the full reference of the diagram. Then in your body you just refer to Appendix 1 (as long as you have referenced the diagram in the Appendix).
