Yep that was my answer. However the answers they provided said the answer was 6. Generally i can tell if the answers are wrong or if im wrong, but i didnt know what they did so i couldnt tell

Lee your way makes sense, and its what i thought of as well when the answers went for a amplitude approach. But idk why the answers did 2a when clearly it takes 4 times the amplitude to reach the starting position again

The distance between both the endpoints is 2a. So if they doubled 2a, they got 4a.

The amplitude is just the distance from an endpoint to the equilibrium

Lee i know how to get the answer. Im confused as to what they did.
They didnt do 4a, they just did 2a

It's possible that the question intended to ask what's the distance travelled from one end to the other? Anyway, as asked (distance in a full cycle), the answer has to be 4A, where A is the amplitude.

But I thought you said they found the distance between the endpoints and then doubled it?

If they only found the distance between the endpoints and left it there then they're wrong and you have to refer to InteGrand's suggested alternate question

Nup, i said they only found the distance between the endpoints (which is equivalent to doubling the amp). I doubled the distance between the endpoints (which is equivalent to quadrupling the amp)

K then, ill assume they are wrong. Smh, got me so upset, stupid answers

Use Pythagoras' theorem to find half the length of the chord, then double your answer.

OP is the radius of the circle, which is 14.9 metres.

OP = OQ

Let X be the intersection between Chord PQ.

OX = 5.1 metres (given)

Triangle OQX is congruent to Triangle OPX.

Therefore, (14.9)^2 = (5.1)^2 + (x)^2

Therefore x = 14.

14 is half of the chord. Therefore the chord PQ is 28 metres.

This is equivalent to doing the substitution:

Let u = ln x

.: du = (1/x)dx

$\therefore \int \frac {ln x}{2x}dx = \frac {1}{2}\int lnx \times \frac {1}{x} dx = \frac {1}{2}\int u du = \frac {1}{2} \times \frac {u^2}{2} + C = \frac {(ln x)^2}{4} + C$

$\frac{dx_{m}}{dt}=(t-t^2)(-2e^{-t})+(2e^{-t}(1-2t))=-2e^{-t}t+2e^{-t}t^2+2e^{-t}-4e^{-t}t$

$Which simplifies down to v= 2e^{-t}(t^2-3t+1)$

$Red represents $ x_{a}, $ Blue represents $ x_{b}, $ Violet represents $ x_{m}, $ and orange represent the velocity functions.$

$By letting $ x_{m}=0, $ we can solve for the time returning back to the origin $ 0= 2te^{-t}(1-t), $ as shown graphically by the violet function in the graph$

$$ t=1 , then substituting this back into the speed function one can solve for speed.$ |v(1)|=|2e^{-1}[(-1)^2-3(1)+1]|=|\frac{-2}{e}|=\frac{2}{e}$

I have decided to finish the rest of Cambridge Year 12 3 Unit Ex 3B Q 14 (b) (c) and (d) from my point of view.

$Q 14 (b) $ By setting v=0 $ , 0=t^2-3t+1$

$t=\frac{3 \pm \sqrt{9-4(1)(1)}}{2(1)}=\frac{3\pm \sqrt{5}}{2}$

$$ By observation from the graphs above, the graph is furthest right when $ t=\frac{3-\sqrt{5}}{2}$

$$ The function is furthest left when $ t=\frac{3+\sqrt{5}}{2}$

$Q 14 (c) As \ t \to \infty, x_{a} \to 0$

$As \ t \to \infty, x_{b} \to 0$

$As \ t \to \infty, x_{m} \to 0$

$Q 14 (d) x_{d}=x_{a}-x_{b} =4te^{-t}-(-4t^2e^{-t})$

$=4te^{-t}+4t^2e^{-t}$

$= 4te^{-t} (1+t)$

$\frac{dx_{d}}{dt}=(1+t)[e^{-t}(4)+4t(-e^{-t})]+4te^{-t}$

$= (1+t)[4e^{-t}-4te^{-t}]+4te^{-t}$

$=4e^{-t}-4te^{-t}+4te^{-t}-4t^2e^{-t}+4te^{-t}$

$=4e^{-t}+4te^{-t}-4t^2e^{-t} =4e^{-t}(1+t-t^2)$

$Set \frac{dx_{d}}{dt}=0$

$0=4e^{-t}(1+t-t^2)$

$Can also be written as : t^2-t-1=0$

$$ By using the quadratic roots formula: $ t= \frac{-(-1) \pm \sqrt{(-1)^2-4(1)(-1)}}{2(1)}$

$= \frac{1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}$

$t in this case cannot be $ t=\frac{1-\sqrt{5}}{2} $ since time cannot be a negative quantity.$

$\therefore $ the solution for t must be $ t=\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$

The graph below shows the maximum distance apart which occurs roughly at t=1.618, it basically is the graph of
