Ya'll sound like such talented musos! My friend, jess is a singer, and she doing:

*Diamonds are a girl's best friend - Moulin Rouge/Nicole Kidman
*Blame on the Boogie - The Jackson 5
*You're the voice - Farnsie
*One day I'll fly away - Moulin Rouge/Nicole Kidman

She's gonna be great - i've heard her pieces and they're awesome; but she's worried that all the classically trained performers are gonna blow her out of the water and she'll be scaled badly for her lack of sophistication.

What do you guys think?

Nah. Classically trained performers are a different style altogether. Just make sure she practices and gets good feedback/criticism, and creates a wonderful performance overall, then she shouldn't stress too much.

One piece of advice though, make sure she's doing songs that display a lot of her talents. Remember dynamics. In her repetoire, maybe there should be a LITTLE bit of variety. My biggest criticism is that one or two of those songs are really common for a HSC Music 1 piece (Nicole Kidman etc). You guys should probably try and avoid that.

I do music 1, and i guess alot of you do Music 2?

the thing with performance in Music 1, is you have to remember to be engaging (our head of music calls it the HSC-X factor, which is lame, but gives you a good indication of how you need to try and engage the marker not only audially but also aesthetically, to an extent).

You need to pick pieces that showcase what YOU can do, which seems obvious, but alot of people in my class get marked down because the pieces dont suit the way they play. Get somebody to tell you which pieces suit you best. Don't just play the music, you have to lead the music (this is especially important if you're playing with an ensemble).

I dont know if that helps anyone?

There are more then one set of HSC markers. Remember, they have to do every school that does music in the entire state in two weeks!

At the moment they're halfway through the performances. Encore nominations come out a little over a week! Who's anxious?

Out of interest, do they notify the school or you in "a little over a week" if you're shortlisted for Encore?

I know with Textiles they don't let you know about the Texstyle exhibition until long after the HSC written exams have been completed; end of November.

I think both, but I definitely know that you get a letter in the mail after they have finished collaborating the nominationswhich, so my music teacher says, is the week after the prac exams finish.

And I remember in previous years they have annouced at the year 12 final assembly people who got nominated for encore, so its definitely this term sometime.

I performed today, it wasn't as nervewracking as i was led to believe by my damn music teacher. The examiners were really nice and helpful, even when i stuffed up my viva ( blundering around and getting tongue tied is NOT the way to go people)

The piece i performed were;
Release - George (Music of the 20th and 21st century)
Nobody knows you when you're down and out- Bessie Smith( Jazz)
Noone knows who I am -Jekyll and Hyde musical (music of the theatre)

Being a vocalists sucks sometimes, but today i think i kept my cool, and i was told it was the best i'd ever done it.( No boasting intended, i was just really pleased)

Now to relax..... ahhhhh....
