Waiting for a war on hurricanes to be declared......

In all seriousness can't help but feel for the citizens of New Orleans. Situation seems pretty bad much of the city is damaged, more water is still flowing in as they havn't been able to block the levies. Can't start pumping water out till the electricity grid is restored. Threat of disease grows daily.

It's pretty fucked.

My expectations: martial law to curtail looting, chinooks flying in material to block levies, bringing in diesel generators to start the pumping. Airdropping fresh food and water. Spraying to contain outbreak of malaria etc.

On the plus as other oil producers increase supply to capitalise on the high prices the increase in capacity will return prices to normal.

This thing's gonna take years to fix. Apparently the water wont be draining for a long time.

it's bad for the people i have seen the footage and it doesn't look good.. The government should be doing more to assist yet they don't really care about some areas and that is the truth...

In a way, it's to be expected given the inequalities evident in the US and the fact that it is pretty much the poorest region of the world's richest country. However, it should be pointed out that such incidents (shootings, financial looting, etc.) are relatively isolated.

So...are we donating 40 billion dollars to help rebuild America or...

That's slightly ignorant to suggest that people shouldn't live in the New Orleans area because it's prone to seasonal storms. Hurricane's on the same level as Katrina happen how often? That's like saying everybody in California should relocate because San Adrea's fault is going to engulf the entire west coast...maybe....one day....possibly.

"People were dying off. There were people shooting, fights broke out, the bathrooms were all clogged up and there was no water," she said. "Then the police started shooting. I couldn't stay in there."

Survivors said they saw the bodies of people shot dead lying in front of the convention centre. An atmosphere of death and foreboding set in among the throng waiting to be evacuated while Mayor Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS" for help.

"We got dead bodies sitting next to us for days," said Thomas Jessie, a 31-year-old roofer. "I feel like I am going to die. People are going to kill you for water."

Wow. After the London Bombings the British showed nothing but support and resiliance. Instead of showing the same, the Americans have resorted to killing and looting. Unbelievable.

Yeah it amazing what is going on over there, here is a really freaky story:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/we-are-out-here-like-pure-animals/2005/09/02/1125302714538.html

"Man's life is as cheap as beasts"... people are acting like animals, it reminds me of a Lord of the Flies type situation.

I can't believe people are acting in such a terrible manner. In other countries disasters have brought communities together, and strangers work together to try and help each other out. IN the USA, perhaps the culture is too much of a culture of greed for that to happen.

Does anyone else think that their emergency response has been quite frankly pretty shit? I don't understand why people don't have food and water in the land of plenty, and why they can't get enough buses to get people out. If the rescue effort had been more efficient I doubt there would be as many problems of violence etc.

But it would be pretty damn horrible, I do feel a tremendous amount for the innocent people who aren't shooting at choppers and stuff like that.

"As flies to wanton boys at we t the Gods, they kill us for their sport"

Who said King Lear was not relevant?

They got criticised for not acting fast at Christmas with the tsunami, it's suprising to see the same lax attitude towards their own people. Okay well maybe not suprising. Then again the magnitude of the disaster would make it hard to authorities to act appropriately just yet,

Yeah it is like Lord of the flies. The entire city is revealing the true nature of humanity.

It is an exemplar of the consequence of the breakdown of the rule of law.

I really have hardly any pity for the people (some for the innocent ones). But for the ones doing the looting and shooting, how stupid must these people be?
I don't ever recall scenes of anarchy when the Boxing Day tsunami hit and that death toll is in the 150,000s.

They were even given advance notice to leave so I see no reason why the people who decided to remain can whine about being in a disaster zone.

Well yes they were told to leave, but you must remember the socio-economic dempgraphic of many of these people. About a third of new orleans cant afford a car, so they really couldnt have left if they wanted to.

We are dealing with a very poor and uneducated region of the US.

Thanks for that, Dues (I was about to restate that very point myself). It isn't an excuse, but it does put the situation in context.
