yeah i would say either malware, spyware or ad-ware, if anti-virus and stuff can not get rid of it , i would do a format.

You are forgetting she is computer illiterate. Formatting takes a little bit of PC know-how. If I were you, I'd get someone you know (who kinda knows computers) to have a look at it and see if they can fix it.

depends, with vista and Windows 7 it is pretty intuitive, with XP not so much.

Ubuntu is also very easy to install even if you know very little about computers

Before the days of Windows update, i hated formatting.

Had to go here and there to retrieve your drivers and stuff. But i doubt you'd be able to get a person who is computer illiterate to format their computer. It's a bit like trying to get somebody who doesn't know much about building houses, to construct a house. Sure, it may look easy at first. But there are little bits and pieces that you need to be aware about.
