Mate, how is the Army of all places, a 'Dead End' job? Uni isn't for everyone, and those people who defer and don't take up a Uni place either didn't really need, or want a degree. They just saved themselves thousands.

Of those that do defer and then take up a place, research shows they are more committed to their studies and, generally do better.

lol yeah, how can the army be a dead end job? Who will be saving ur arses if we ever get invaded? A lawyer?
The US.

The army is for those who are not smart enough for uni and not
practical enough to be tradesmen.

Eventually you leave with skills that are of no use in the real world.

I know an aircraft cargo packer.
yeah, his only job is to make sure that cargo loaded onto army aircraft
( the army have some planes ) are stowed safely.
What sort of job would he get when he leaves ?

In addition, 90 % of women in the army get sexually harassed.
Many of the officers expect women in the lower ranks to be their personal sluts.

cause like, there are no planes in civillian use, he is sure to be unemployable.

whos gonna load your bag on the plane when your parents fly you to and from canberra every week?

aside from the infantry (where you learn to kill people) all the other corps offer great training and experience with real world equivalence.

90% of women get sexually harrased ... figures from where?

the army offers a lot, i would encourage you to join bearpooh, even if only for a year or two. you would get a lot out of it im sure.

Monetary benefits of Uni

Have a look at the recent Ross Gittins in the SMH.

Adjusting for opportunity cost and inflation, he calculates
that the return on investment of the cost of going to uni
is between 14 to 16 %

No, they did not save thousands.
They lost hundreds of thousands ( at least ) in forgone additional future earnings.

My dad earns $ 150 / hour ( doctor in general practice )

How much would he earn if he had not gone to uni ?
$ 20 - $ 25 / hour ?

That is ( 150 - 25 ) * 40 * 50 = 250,000 $ extra in just one year .

In a 20 - 40 year work life , that is between 5 to 10 million extra that he would
not see a cent of if he had not gone to university.

And even that is not the point.
He gets to do something that he enjoys and is very good at.
He also gets to help children and men and women daily.

At Christmas time, we never buy cakes because we are inundated with
cakes and cookies and chocolates and gifts from grateful patients.

Not everyone wants/can be to be a doctor.

You also dont have to go to uni to make that kinda money. What about Entreprenurs?
Agreed.
If you are successful , you make billions.

I regret that I am not Packer or even Branson material.
But I would probably make a good lawyer ( that is what I have chosen anyway )
or a doctor ( I have not chosen this route, though my sister has )

If your folks are happy running a newsagency, that is great for them.
Everyone has different aspirations.

The important thing is peace and happiness.

My dad calls it "serenity".
He even achieves it sometimes :)

You need to spend 5 years in the army for that ?

That is an unskilled manual labourer's job.

Anyway, not going to canberra.
I managed to scrape into UNSW.

bearpooh...do you ever say anything that is actually helpful to anyone? I have yet to see it.
Let me think..................

Nope!

Helping someone would automatically disqualify me for
membership in the Satan Worshippers Club.

you don't have to go to uni to get a job that you enjoy and are good at!! how many people go to uni thinking they're doing their dream course only to find that they don't like it so much after all?!

so what? that has nothing to do with the fact he went to uni..volunteers ALSO enjoy what they do whilst helping people daily..they don't need a uni degree to do that..

you guys..if you don't want to go to uni..don't waste your time!! uni is not the be-all and end-all..

it is not an unskilled job. if the plane (or ship) is loaded incorrectly it will crash (or sink). this still happens ,i am pretty sure a shipping container capsized pretty recently, same princples for planes.

maybe its not as glamourous as being a lawyer, and i am sure most loadies would prefer to do something else however, it is honest work, and it beats being on the dole and/or a drug addict.

you seem to come from a well off family with loving parents who support you. you are very lucky, many people in australia (let alone the world) do not have that sort of support or opportunities. it is luck that you were born to the family you were, you (as well as all of us) could have as easily died a quick death on a staple of a porno magazine. you are just young and maybe a bit sheltered and thats ok, but hopefully you will grow up soon.

do you think the people who pack your bags on the plane or collect your rubbish get up each day and say 'gee im glad i get to handle everyones crap today!' ... no. do you want to take your garbage every week to the dump? i dont think so (i know i certainly dont).

the people who do the things you wouldnt even think of doing are still important and save you from having to do them. they are just people like you and me, with the same fears and desires of a stable and secure life. you are just showing your immaturity and ignorance by saying what you are saying.

anyway, congrats on getting into unsw.
